Hendery sat with his arms crossed. They sat in awkward silence for what felt like forever as one just waited for the other to speak.
“So… Hendery leaned back in his chair. “Why did you call me here so late at night.”
“Well…” Ten leaned forward in his own chair and avoided eye contact with Hendery. “I figure you’re not staying here, so I should probably update you on where everything stands.”
Hendery nodded in return.
“I begged them not to take you because of the timing. We are in the middle of a war and we are neutral, but I am afraid we can’t hold that for much longer… As for you getting home, I am still coming up with a plan that is almost foolproof. Understand that I can’t go through with this plan until after the marriage, if you were to disappear before then I am sure they would try to retrieve you. Oddly enough, I am hoping the focus on war will be greater later on, if I can fake your death or even shift more focus on the war I hope they won’t try to find you…” He shifted his gaze back to Hendery’s, “Oh, I almost forgot!” stood up and turned to the cabinet behind him. “Ah, here it is.” He stood up on his tiptoes and grabbed what looked like a flare gun off of it.
‘He’s so short…’ Hendery thought to himself as he stifled a laugh.
“Don’t torment me.” He turned around and sat back down in front of Hendery.
“Now, be careful, you only have three shots in it.” He smiled and placed it in front of the other.“What is it?” Hendery picked it up and turned it over, surprised at its simplicity.
“Well, when you shoot it, it won’t make a sound, it won’t even make a flare. It will send an SOS signal directly to our ship.” He shifted back in his chair a little uncomfortably and looked away.
“You don’t have to keep it, but if anything happens on your return home or if war were to break out on Earth…” he returned Hendery’s gaze. “I would like you to use it.” He bit his lip wondering if he should have said anything.“Well…” Hendery didn’t know what to say. “Thank you, that’s very sweet, I’ll keep it.”
“Ah, I'm happy then!” Ten smiled and reached over the table to ruffle his hair. “Anyways, it’s best if you get some rest, yeah.” He stood up.
“Where are you going?”
“I have a meeting in a bit.” He grinned “Why? Afraid you’ll miss me?”
Ignoring Ten’s comment he stood up too. “You should get some rest Ten…”
“I promise I will when it’s all over.”~
Two days had passed since he last saw Ten, and his absence didn’t go unnoticed.
He had been there a little over a week yet he still hadn’t grown used to the vastness of the ship. It felt like he had to walk around for thirty minutes just to see another living being.
Hendery looked down at his coffee and put his bookmark in the book he was reading. He was sitting in the ginormous library, it took him an hour to find anything about Earth and it was just a book full of pictures, pictures he never cared for like the ones on the nature channels. He found some weird comfort in staring at a picture of a kangaroo for five minutes.
‘It’s too quiet…’ He thought as he looked around. Irritated, he sighed and laid his head down on the table.‘I never thought being on an alien spaceship could be so boring…’
He felt a sudden shake and his head shot up.It stopped
‘It must be turbulence…’ He thought.
He looked down at his coffee cup and suddenly he was completely knocked out of his seat.Books started falling off the shelves and he was practically in a room that wanted to murder him.
‘I need to get the f**k out of here…” He jumped up off the ground and sprinted across the library.
The door opened quickly and he managed to just barely miss a large book coming straight for his head.
Hendery’s POV
The normally empty hallways were now crowded with people, cleaners, crew, and even some higher ranked people. All different colors and shapes, and even different ages.
I ran out into the hallway and looked around frantically to find someone I knew when A small green child with blue hair and pitch black eyes stared up at me. He grabbed onto my arm and black tears ran down his face.
“⊑⟒⌰⌿ ⋔⟒” The boy cried.
I felt helpless, I had no idea what he was saying.
I got down on my knees and looked up at the boy. “I will try my best to help you.” I stood up and took the small child’s hand.
‘Where could I go for help? I know like 3 people on this whole continent of a ship…’ He thought but walked swiftly down the hallway with the boy.
“Your highness!” I turned around to see a concerned Ambrosia scurrying down the hallway to reach me.
She stopped in front of me to catch her breath.
“What’s going on?”
“We think we’ve been attacked, but it could have been unintentional, we don’t know yet. The repairmen are running to the left wing now, from the shaking I can tell it did quite some damage.”
I covered my mouth for a second out of shock but put my hand back to my side and moved the little boy in front of me.
“Could you get him to his mom?” I asked.“Oh, Centurion does not have a mom. The staff has been taking care of him for a few months now, he clings onto anything that feels safe.” She smiled despite the current circumstances they were all in. “He must think your flimsy ass is safe.”
I rolled my eyes. “It’s not the time to jok-” There was a rough shake and the lights went out. I crouched to the ground and held on tightly to Centurion.
There was silence. Stillness.
Voices started speaking again and the power went back on.A voice came over the intercom, but I was still left completely clueless. When the voice stopped people got up, and some people even chuckled.
“It was a misfire.” Ambrosia sighed in relief.
“Come on now.” She gestured for Centurion to take her hand and he backed away. “We are not sure yet what language he speaks, we don’t know where he came from. There was a distress signal and we found him drifting in a pod, he was almost out of oxygen.”
“⍙⊑⟒⍀⟒ ⏃⍀⟒ ⍙⟒?” The boy said.
“We think “Kaacha” means home, that’s the only clue we have. Later we should take him to the library and see if there is anything he recognizes.” She took the boys hand and he hesitantly walked to her side.
“That sounds like a good idea.” I crouched down and patted the boy on his head. “See you later.”
“Hey.” I felt a hand on my shoulder and flipped around to see a worried Ten.
“H-Heyyyy.” I smiled and looked him up and down. He was in uniform, and I hate to admit it, but he looked pretty damn good.
“Sorry about that, I should have told you that these things happen.” Ten sighed “I came to look for you as soon as I could, are you hurt?”
“No, and don’t worry about me, you’re busy.”
“Are you sure?” He touched my face and tilted my head to look for any injuries.
“Well.” I took his hand and gently moved it away from me. “You may owe me a coffee.”
