We both stared at the man who was holding the rifle not knowing what to do.
I think Kenny had a gun stashed somewhere, too, but the guy would probably shoot us before we attempted anything. I was honestly getting scared with every moment that passes, but Kenny being the brave idiot he is spoke to the guy casually.
"Nice rifle." He said smiling cheerfully.
The man's expressionless face actually softened as he return the smile and set the rifle aside. "Oh, sorry." He chuckled stepping aside to let us in. "I hope I didn't scare your little brother. You can't be too careful these days."
"Oh, don't worry about it. He's used to it." Kenny said pushing me in front of him since I refused to move. I only relaxed a little when I saw nobody else but the grumpy old lady inside. I really thought we had walked into a trap. It's hard for me to trust anybody, but they did seem like genuine good people.
I hope.
The apartment we were in did not look like it originally belonged to the old lady, especially not when a picture of a young couple was placed on the bookshelf. I could even see that one of the rooms was an incomplete nursery which kind of made me feel a little bit sad about all the things the zombies ruined. Heck, I was supposed to go to college this year, but it just didn't happen.
Any thoughts I had about lives being ruined were immediately forgotten when Kenny threw himself on the couch making himself at him. That sure didn't take him long.
The old lady came in and greeted us with a huge smile. "You remind me so much of my grandkids." She said mostly talking to me as she placed a hand on my shoulder. I immediately flinched back without thinking, and I immediately regretted it.
"I – Sorry." I apologized turning red. I just wasn't used to people, especially not when I spent most of the apocalypse with Kenny. Thankfully, I had a legit excuse ready. "I was shot in this shoulder." I said pulling my shirt a little to let her see the bandages. It was just a graze, and was mostly healed by now that I almost forgot about it, but it was still a good excuse to save this old lady's feelings from being hurt.
"Oh, dear." She said placing a hand over her mouth. "You two have been through so much, haven't you?"
"Not really." Kenny shrugged answering her. "We're doing okay."
"Do you know where your parents are?" She asked guiding me with a hand on my back to sit next to Kenny.
"They're dead." He answered simply, and it only made her even more horrified.
"You two can come with us," She told Kenny as she headed to the kitchen and crouched down to get something. "We don't mind having you two."
Kenny looked conflicted, but as soon as he turned to me I shook my head making it clear that I'd rather not tag along with them. He paused studying me for a minute before he slowly nodded his head with a confused frown.
"No, thanks." He said smiling at her when she returned. "We're actually meeting up with the rest of our group.
The old lady handed me a water bottle and made sure to squeeze my uninjured shoulder in a comforting manner. "This is all we have." She told me before she turned to Kenny. "I feel better knowing you two already have a group. George and I are heading west towards one of the towns. I can point it out on a map in case you two needed a place to stay."
"Hopefully it is a safe there." George said from behind me and sat down sighing tiredly. The old lady just gave him a sad look and proceeded to take out a map from her worn backpack to show us where exactly they were headed. I did not recognize the place, but Kenny looked like he did.
