Chapter 23: Intruders and Authority

So as of now, Aulerie is canon and both Red and Leaf somehow made it through the Route on their Valerie chase.  Will they Leaf get to reunite with her best friend this chapter?  Let's find out.

"Wait, how do you know Valerie?" the brown-haired girl- Leaf I guess?- asks me, sounding incredulous.  "Unless... she became a fairy, Red!  Just as I thought!"

"Hold your horses," the boy named Red says, still staring in semi-shock at me.  I guess he's surprised to see fairies are real, huh?  "You both might be talking about different Valeries."

"That's true," I point out.  This guy's got a brain in his skull I suppose.  "Describe her for me."

"Um..." Leaf trails away for a second, thinking to herself.  "She has dark reddish-brown wavy hair, purple and golden eyes.  She's shy but she has a heart of gold."

I start to grin, but stop myself when I remember that I'm supposed to keep a poker face.  Yep, that's our Valerie.  "So it looks like we're talking about the same person then."

The human girl smiles at me.  "Then that means you've seen her!" she exclaims, sounding hopeful.

"I have," I say warily, "and I can tell you more about her if you can tell me how you knew her.  I can't just go disclosing information for anyone you know."

"Leaf and Valerie were best friends," Red says promptly, speaking up for the girl- his girlfriend maybe?  "They went to school together, grew up together, and were in the same club together."

I begin to think; Valerie did mention that she and her friends were in a club together when she was a human.  "What's the name of the club?" I ask them both, looking to Leaf to answer.  If she can answer right, then I know that she's not some kind of impostor. 

"The Fairy Club," the girl in question answers promptly.  "But formally- like in the yearbook and stuff- it's called the Myths Club."

Good enough for me.  "Good news, you passed my test," I tell her with a grin.  She smiles back, although I can sense that she's still in a little bit of shock.  "So tell me again what you're both doing here?  Because I think you know that you're not in your world anymore."

"Something happened in our world," Red answers, sounding a little confused.  I hope he isn't hoping that I explain it to him because I'm not the one that knows the most about this situation.  "It's caused every single person, save for me and Leaf so far, to be driven to madness.  I think they also hate fairies as well, because the fairies that performed the spell were chased.  That brings me to my next question."  His eyes narrow.  "Why would you perform that spell on, as far as I know, the entirety of humanity?"

"I wasn't the one who did it," I say defensively.  "And I know that the fairy who did perform the spell didn't do it intentionally."

"Intentionally or not," Red says warily, "it's my job to protect everyone."

"Protect everyone?" I repeat, my eyes narrowing.  "Who exactly are you?"

"I'm the Champion," he answers in a proud manner.  "I am the Champion of the Kanto region, and was elected to become the Leader of the Champion's Court, a group that consists of Champions from all regions.  We make a lot of the decisions for everybody; I have a lot of power here, Miss Verity, so I suggest you give me my answers."

"Or...?" I cross my arms.  I'm not letting some boy boss me around, even if he is the supposed "Champion".  

"If the people want to eliminate you and there's evidence for me that fairies will cause us harm, then I will," he says quietly.
