chapter sixteen - act one
I TOLD YOU SO
──────────"What the fuck are you doing, Din?"
"He was going to get himself killed."
"And that's our problem how?"
From the second Eden and Din had escaped the earshot of Toro, they had descended into an argument that was still ongoing, even as they approached the Hangar. Eden skids to a stop in their path, turning toward the man that was the source of her bubbling frustration. Despite their small distance in height, she tilts her head upwards, her stare piercing through his helmet's visor and directly into his eyes.
"He isn't some innocent village dweller that doesn't know how to defend himself. He's a bounty hunter, for star's sake. One who's only wish in life is to join the Guild. An organization, may I remind you, that we royally pissed off. We're one mistake away from him realizing who we are, and then we'll have the whole Guild on our asses."
"The kid barely knows what he's doing. He's never even met the guild, let alone heard of us." Turning his gaze away from the woman's red-hot stare, Din continues to stride toward the Hangar; Eden forced to keep up with him. "We'll be long gone before he can even leave this planet."
"You're insufferable," Eden mutters beneath her breath, though Din's trained ears pick up on the subtle insult. A conflict alight within her, a sigh echoes from Eden's mouth, the notion of finally giving in to Din's idiotic idea one that does not sit well with her. "Fine. But we have to be careful, all right? If things go south, I won't hesitate to throw him under the bus."
"About that..." Din hesitates within the midst of his step, his words trailing off unsurely. He falls silent for a fleeting moment, contemplating how to best phrase his next words, knowing that they will only fuel the argument between them. "It's safer if you stay here and watch over the kid. I'll finish the job and be right back."
A dry chuckle ripples from Eden's throat. "You can't be serious."
"Eden-"
"No. I'm not some babysitter. This is our job." Eden's words are stern, but Din's stony facade falters not even for a moment. His unwavering decision only mutates her frustration with the stubborn man. "You think I'll sit here, all fine and dandy, while you're out there getting yourself killed, all because you have some sort of saviour complex? That's not gonna fly."
