Wanrings: just a lil teeny bit sad but it's mostly fluffy
Remus walked out onto the front porch of his house. It was a summer evening, the sun was almost gone, and Remus felt a shiver crawl up his spine when the wind hit his back.
He looked over to the left of the porch to see his daughter crawled up on Y/N's lap. Y/N seemed to be fast asleep, a children's book lay facedown on the ground.
But their daughter seemed wide awake, she was picking at Y/N's sleeves and trying to braid her hair. Remus laughed a little at the sight, walking over to the both of them and tapping his daughter on the shoulder.
"Don't you think you should let your mother get some rest?" He whispered, trying not to wake Y/N up. "But I'm almost done braiding her hair." She said, tugging slightly at her mom's roots to show Remus.
"And I think you've done a wonderful job and she'll love it when she wakes up, but it's okay to be done for now." He smiled. The smaller Lupin held out her arms for him to pick her up.
He placed her on his hip and went down the steps of the porch into the long field of grass and gardens they had in front of their house. The sky seemed to be filled with stars, and once he sat down and placed her in his lap she pointed a few out to him.
She was filled with her mothers light, he could already sense her passion for astronomy that her mother has. And then Remus thought about all those nights the two of them spent at Hogwarts going up to the astronomy tower.
Y/N held his hand as they walked up the steps of the astronomy tower, her hands were a little clammy in anticipation. It wasn't like there was anything special in particular happening in the sky tonight, but she always adored sneaking off with him.
He never usually did it, him being a prefect and all. But one night in his fifth year when he was doing rounds, him and Lily decided to check the astronomy tower before heading to bed, and low and behold Y/N was there staring up at the sky.
She apologized profusely, saying she would never do it again, but Remus and Lily let her off without any sort of punishment. It was mainly because Remus felt is heart skip a beat when he saw her face in the moonlight, and Lily didn't feel like ruining the moment the two shared just looking at each other.
On some nights where Remus didn't have rounds, he would try and sneak up the steps of the tower, to see if she was there. She was there most of the time, but the first few nights he checked, she wasn't. Probably because she was scared to sneak off again.
The two of them didn't seem to talk to each other outside of these nights until their sixth year when Remus asked her out. And now they were both standing together, arms on the metal banister on the last day they would ever spend at Hogwarts.
"I'll miss this." She sighed, breaking her gaze from the sky and looking at the boy next to her. "What do you mean?" He said, sneaking his arm around her waist. "Oh you know what I mean." She smacked her hand against his chest.
"You know, we don't have to end things right here." He said, giving her a tight lipped smile as the growing anxiety washed through him. When she didn't say anything, he elaborated. "I'm er, just saying that maybe we could like, uh- move in together after the summer?"
"I'd love that, Remus."
"Papa?" The voice coming from his daughter broke him out of his thoughts. He stroked her back. "What is it?" "I know they all have names," She spoke, in reference to the universe above her head. "do you know any of them?"
He looked back over at Y/N, curled up a little more into herself than a couple minutes ago. "Not many, that was always your mother's thing." "Well then why don't I go ask her?" She stood up from his lap, trying to run back up the porch, but Remus caught hold of her tiny little arm before she could make it up.
"No no come back. I'll tell you the few that I know." She obliged, nodding her head and sitting back into his lap. He pointed up into the vast sky filled with bright lights. He only knew a small amount, and if he had never met Y/N he would only know one.
She pointed up once more. "Do you know that one? The brightest?" Remus' breath hitched, looking up at the star. "Yes. That one is named Sirius. Or the Dog Star."
"Uncle Sirius?" She said, looking back at her father with a questioning look. "Yes. Sirius is named after that star." He felt a little uncomfortable talking to her about Sirius, being the fact that the man was now locked up in Azkaban and when he was reminded of the boy he felt a lingering anger for betraying his best friends.
"I haven't seen him in a while." She said, picking at a few pieces of grass. Remus didn't want to shake the faint smile off her face, so he continued. "Yeah, he was my best mate. Back when he was around all the time, he loved you. He loved you and Harry like you two were his own children." She looked back up at her dad. "You loved him too, he had that charm about him. Makes everyone love him."
"I don't remember him very much. Where is he?" She started to play at the ends of Remus' hair. "Well first, he was only around when you were a couple months old. But even then he still had the charm to put a smile on your face. I can't quite tell you where he is now, but when you're older and you ask about it, I'll tell you."
Remus began to think about James, about how much he missed the sight of Sirius and James bickering in the common room. "And James, I miss him too. He's Harry's dad, would've been your godfather if he was still here. Always caused havoc with Pads."
She wanted to ask him about all his friends, but she could tell it wasn't quite the right time, since the boy seemed to be staring back up at the brightest star in the sky and a tear fell from his eyes. He didn't notice he was crying until he felt his daughters tiny hand wiping the tears from under his eyes. He smiled at the sight of her intensely focused on clearing his face of tears.
"It makes me sad when you're sad." She said, rubbing her eyes when she started to feel a little sleepy. He sighed, pushing some of her hair to the back of her ear. He held her chin so she could look up at him and said, "It's alright to cry, you know. Not all tears are made of sadness, some are made from lost memories, happiness, anger, fear, and content. Crying is no sign of weakness, and I never want you to think that it is."
She tried to wrap her arms fully around her fathers torso, and he chuckled when she wasn't able to. "I'm not sad, I think I just needed to cry. We all need to sometimes."
He picked her up and placed her on his hip, walking back up the porch. Remus walked up to his wife, and shook her shoulder ever so slightly. She stirred a bit before opening her eyes.
She got up and hugged into his side, sighing as the three of them all shared a brief moment filled with content as another cold breeze swept across them.
And when Remus walked up the stairs and placed his daughter in her bed, and Y/N was already fast asleep on her side of their mattress Remus thought about something he read in a book all those years ago when he lost James and Lily.
"Keep love in your heart. A life without it is like a sunless garden when the flowers are dead. The consciousness of loving and being loved brings a warmth and a richness to life that nothing else can bring." — Oscar Wilde
And he thought about how happy he was to at least have two people in the world for him. This time when he felt the tears falling from his eyes, he wasn't sad, he was just happy to be living a life he could call his own.
