Warnings: underage drinking
One late summer evening, Y/N stood outside the Potter household. James had invited his friends over one night before the summer ended and they started their final year at Hogwarts. Y/N was a little surprised she was invited, only really being close to Lily and Remus.
She looked off into the gentle dark night. Crickets and the distant sound of laughter from inside the house filled the air. Y/N sighed and took another swig from the bottle of firewhiskey in her hands.
"You shouldn't drink so much of that. Don't want to carry you home." She looked behind her shoulder. Remus Lupin was standing in the doorway, yellow light from inside the house outlining his figure.
She chuckled, turning back to look at the front yard. "You're one to talk Lupin, you've had more than I have tonight." He strode his way next to her, subconsciously leaning into her like some force brought them together.
"Well Y/N, I know from experience at many parties that you tend to get quite drunk after two drinks." He was right, it was easy to get her under the influence, and she was definitely drunk right now, but she didn't want to admit it.
When he didn't say anything, she sighed, walking a little ahead of her so she was sitting on the banister of the porch. Looking directly at him. "Something on your mind?" He questioned, cheeks tinting ever so slightly.
She look at her feet. "I forgot." He chuckled. "Well, you are quite drunk aren't you?" He crossed his arms over his chest like a concerned parent would. "No, I am not drunk." She got up from the banister, tripping on her own feet. "Are you so sure about that?" He caught her arm before she could fall to the ground, avoiding his gaze.
"Okay maybe I am... a little drunk." No words were spoken as she went back to standing next to him, taking a sip of her drink every now and then. A cold breeze blew through the air and Y/N shivered a bit, envying Remus for looking so warm in his beige sweater.
"You're wearing a sweater in the summer." She stated, holding onto his shirt. "Why is that?" She looked back up at him, genuinely curious. He rolled his eyes, leaning away from her so she could let go of his shirt. "You know why."
Her mind wasn't working very properly, the alcohol seemingly kicking in now more than before. But before she could really wrack her mind about what he meant, she heard one of her favorite songs playing from James' record player.
She placed her drink on the ground and ran off the front porch, wind hitting her face and she twirled around, relishing in the feeling of the soft breeze. Remus admired her dancing around to the old rock song. "Remus you should come dance with me, it's really fun." "You look ridiculous."
Even though she had asked him to dance with her, he avoided going down there as much as he could. She looked so happy, and he really wanted to join her, but he didn't want to accidentally confess how he felt about her, so he stayed put.
She was like some sort of ethereal being, dancing in the moonlight. So carefree, it must be so nice to be able to let go like that. To be able to really live, he thought.
The song ended not long after she asked him to dance, and she stopped abruptly, looking back up at the boy, waiting for him to say something. But she heard Sirius laugh from inside and she heard him trying out the keys on the piano, beginning to play a soft piano melody his mother must have taught him.
She started to sway to the unknown song and looked at Remus, who's gaze was fixed intently upon her. "Can I teach you how to dance?" She asked, stopping her swaying. He didn't know why this was so different than what she had asked him before, but suddenly he was nodding and walking down the porch steps.
She smiled brightly at him, and grabbed his hands. She placed his hands on her waist, and her arms around his neck. He was a little stiff, scared to be so close to her. She chuckled before saying, "No need to be so tense, Remus. It's just me."
She was right, it was just Y/N, but he couldn't stop his heart beating a little faster than usual when she pulled him in even closer than before. The cold metal of her bracelets hit the back of neck, but he didn't seem to mind. He was glad to be so close to her.
"Alright, I'm going to teach you how to Waltz. It's quite easy." She then taught him everything he needed to know, and the both of them were dancing together in James's front yard. He was even feeling confident enough to twirl her around a few times, which resulted in laughs from the both of them.
Sirius stopped playing the piano, and James went back to playing his records, but Y/N didn't let go of Remus. Breathing in his scent, and feeling herself almost fall asleep in his arms. Remus was like her human pillow at this point, always leaning on him at Hogwarts.
Her head was on his chest, and his on top of hers, tracing patterns onto her back and going back and forth over and over again in his mind about what he should do. It was the perfect moment, but she was drunk.
She pulled away from his chest, still in his arms, and looked disappointedly back into the house. "Whats wrong?" He puzzled, placing his hand on the side of her face, bringing her to look back up at him.
"I don't know, maybe I was just getting my hopes up." She pulled away from him fully now, knowing if she stayed laced within his touch, she wouldn't be able to leave. "About what?" She walked to the porch steps, sitting on them, waiting for him to join her. She didn't want to speak to him face to face. He understood, as if he could read her mind, and sat down next to her.
"About us." She nudged his shoulder, still looking forwards, not at him. He could feel his heart stop, thinking he did something wrong. When he didn't say anything, she panicked and began to explain herself.
"Y'know... all those nights spent in the common room, you're always there by my side, dancing together in front of James' house." She sighed, and looked back at him. His eyebrows were laced together, and she couldn't seem to read his face.
"I really like you, Remus. I don't think I would want to dance with anyone else for the rest of my life." She looked back at the ground, and picked up a few pieces of grass.
Remus wasn't the best at expressing his feelings. He was afraid of intimacy, but everything always seemed to be so natural with her. Although he would've happily confessed his love to her right then and there, he thought of something that seemed so much better.
He stood up, holding out his hand for her to take. She took it with hesitance, wiping the space beneath her eyes. "I don't think I want to dance with anyone else for the rest of my life either." She chuckled, feeling her face heat up at his sly confession.
The two of them stayed like that for a while, swaying together in the moonlight, souls intertwined like they should've been from the start. And Remus kissed her, and everything had fallen into place.
