Regrets

A month later

Dylan has not smiled even once, and he has lost weight due to the lack of appetite. What torments him the most is the deafening silence in the house since Yue left. It reminds him every minute of every day that he was not able to make her stay, he wasn't enough.

It's supposed to hurt, it's a broken heart
But to movin' on is the hardest part
It comes in waves, the letting go
But the memory fades, everybody knows

What if this feeling of hollowness never goes away?

What if I'm tryin', but then I close my eyes

And then I'm right back, lost in that last goodbye?

And what if time doesn't do what it's supposed to do?

What if I never get over you?

Today he is in his car, driving to a meeting at Wang Enterprises. While waiting at a red light, his mom calls and he puts her on speaker because he is a careful driver.

"Hi, mom."

"Hi, son. Are you on your way to see the buyer?"

"Yes, the meeting is in half an hour. I'm almost there."

"Are you sure this is the best decision? I mean, you will save everyone's jobs, but you are sacrificing a lot personally."

"Mom, I don't mind working for these people without pay for one year if that's what you mean. I can put my life on hold as long as those thousands of employees, particularly you and dad, are safe."

"How about the girl and your marriage?"

"I will date this man's daughter for a year as part of the deal, but I told him I am not going to marry her. I am done being a puppet! He just wants to make it look like a family merger. And about the other thing, that was never a marriage... That was grandpa's trap! Besides, my wife is de..."

The next thing Dylan's mom hears on the phone is a loud bang and then the beep of the line being disconnected. She starts screaming desperately and redialing her son's number frantically, but nothing.

What happened? For a second, Dylan thought he had seen Yue and skipped a light, crashing into a truck.

He falls unconscious for a few minutes and then opens his eyes... His face is smacked on the wheel, glass and blood everywhere. The last thing he will remember are the ambulance sirens wailing as he is taken to the hospital.

The day after

Yue is still sleeping when her phone rings at about 5 am.

"Sweetheart, it's Kathy."

Yue is surprised by the call and clears her throat before talking: "Mrs. Wang, is everything ok?"

"No, darling. Wang He Di had an accident."

Yue sits up immediately and her heart starts pounding fiercely on her chest. She feels a chill run through her whole body and when she tries to speak, her voice is not coming out.

"Is... is he... is Dylan..."

"He's in an induced coma. He emergency surgery last night... As his wife, you were supposed to make some decisions about his treatment, but the doctors allowed us to do it in your absence. I just thought you should know that he... I mean, we don't expect anything, I know my son wouldn't want me to call you, but I... I perceive in my heart that you genuinely loved him. You simply were caught off-guard. We shouldn't have told you about the other clauses so soon... This wouldn't have happened."

Yue is silently crying and barely breathing. She cannot believe what is happening, it feels surreal. It is all her fault for sure.

"No, please... You were right to call me, thank you. When... did it happen?"

"Yesterday."

"I will be there as soon as possible."

"Darling, you don't have to come."

"Yes, I do. He's my husband and I should be there with him."

"You know he won't see you if he wakes up..."

"I know, but still..." she sighs.

At the hospital two days later

Yue arrives straight from the airport. The trip was exhausting, she had to catch 3 flights to be able to leave swiftly. She hurries inside the hospital, dragging her suitcase, panting, and sweating...

"Hi – she says breathless at the front desk - I'm looking for my husband, he's here... Wang He Di."

"Hello. He is in room 124, right down the hall. You know he's unconscious, mam?"

"I do" she answers with a gasp.

"Are you ok? You don't look good..."

Yue ignores the nurse's concern and walks anxiously towards Dylan's room; she does not know what to expect, how he will look, who will be there, how she will apologize for the idiotic decision she made when she left...

There it is room 124. Her hand is on the knob, she squeezes her eyes and swallows nervously. Be brave, Shen Yue, he needs you. He will forgive you eventually for being such a moron... Just, open the door and stay this time.

Yue opens the door and finds her handsome husband all bruised and injured, intubated, with wires and needles everywhere. Her soul breaks into a million tiny pieces and she bursts into tears.

"I'm so stupid! I did this to you..." she mumbles between sobs.

She sits on a chair next to him with her face on her hands as her brain starts accusing her for everything, from his anger to the accident. What if this truly is all her fault? What if staying she could have prevented it? Her conscience tortures her.

Her determination now is to make amends. She will not leave his side anymore. No matter how long it takes and no matter what she must do, she will earn his forgiveness.

Days go by and Yue never leaves her husband's side. Her mother-in-law constantly tells her to go home, but she stays there and sleeps night after night on the companion's bed, which is extremely uncomfortable. Yue brought her clothes; she does not need anything else. The VIP room has its own bathroom, that she uses; there is no reason to leave. All that she needs and cherishes is in that room.
