Trinity
"We've been through it three times!" I exclaimed walking away from the screen displaying the wreck that lay a thousand feet beneath us.
"There's nothing there!" JJ agreed calling over the loud waves.
"Shut up!" Kie complained not ready to give up.
"What? It's true!"
I sighed heading over to the little box where JJ had been steering.
"The gold could be buried we don't know."I ignored what Kie had said knowing this had to be the end of the road.
"If it was there, it would have been found in the metal detector." John B muttered letting reality sink further into us all.
"So someone beat us to it." I decided glancing at JJ who had a hard frown on his face. He looked away from me and out the window. He definitely wasn't happy with the defeat. "Or it was never there." He muttered under his breath.
I walked back out shaking my head trying to brush it off- the idea that I was ever excited for the gold.
"Let's pull it back up." I said walking towards Pope.
He nodded fixing his cap then joining my side by the roller, which the thick yellow cord stemmed from and began to reel it upwards against the tugging currents. It was a shitty feeling, I guess it my head it was more reality then I'd admitted and now here we were. Dead trail. No gold in sight. My mind went back to the idea of carrying on a perfect summer but how do you just forget about all we'd done the past few days. And how does John B move on from his dad's coded message, recorded message and life's work?
I wondered if it made him feel better or worse.I'd decided I'd take the day of defeat to surf since I'd spend the morning speaking to my mother. I learned that my dad had mentioned our last conversation to her so it led to another conversation about things and she actually listened - probably because she enjoyed hearing about the good behavior from Anna and Mike. God if she knew I'd been stealing, trespassing and so on. Not to mention how thankful I wasn't there when John B and Kie got caught by that weird deputy 'Shoupe'. If my mother could have it her way she'd put me under surveillance 24/7, with a tracking-chip in my neck. If I was all for leaving the city, I should have guessed she'd be open to it.
"Hey what are you doing?!"
I almost slipped off the edge of my open door at the volume of Kie's voice. I sighed climbing down from strapping my board on top of the car.I laughed awkwardly, "I was gonna go surf." I explain dusting sand off my hands.
"Nope, we are going to the Summer movie series."
"What?"
Kie sighs dramatically, "The OBX is holding movie night kinda thing. It'll be fun."
I frowned.
