Through the Shadows

Chapter 8

"Clary! Clary, wake up please!" Jace shouted louder than he realized.

Jace's heart felt like it was racing faster than any speed the Speed rune could give. His eyes being set into Clary's now dangerously pale face, he completely missed the appearances of the golden flashes on Clary's body.

"Clary, please!" Jace continued pleading. "What is happening to her? What did you do to her?!" Jace shouted as he turned his head back to Matteo.

Just as agitated and confused as Jace, Matteo was clueless of the flashes, as well. "I.. I didn't do anything!"

"The hell you di-" Jace began to accuse Matteo, but the expression across Matteo's face stopped him. Matteo seemed genuinely concerned and scared. Jace came to guess that if they were standing side by side in a mirror, they would both be wearing the same expression on their face. Jace's heart came to a stop as he turned back to Clary. "What.." Jace said under his breath.

"Are those her runes?" Matteo asked in disbelief.

"I think s-"

"By the Angel! What is all the commotion over here?! I can hear yelling all the way in the-" Izzy's words came to a stop just as abruptly as she did. "Jace.. is that Clary?.."

Jace stayed silent, fully aware that Clary being here broke the promise he, Alec, Magnus, Izzy, and Simon had all made to not have any contact with Clary in hopes to not make the Angels more mad. Jace and Alec had spoken about him being in contact with Clary, but not even Alec had agreed to bringing Clary back to the Institute. He could only imagine the shock that Izzy was going through and the angry lecture he would receive from Izzy later for putting Clary at a risk.

"Of course it's Clary." Izzy said shaking her head as if trying to wake up from a dream. "But.. what.. what happened to her??"

"We don't know. She just collapsed and we just noticed her runes." Matteo answered frantically.

"And you are?" Izzy asked.

"That doesn't matter now." Jace said snapping out of thought. "We need to get Clary into a medical room now!" Jace said as he began getting onto his feet with Clary in his arms. Clary's head fell carefully into Jace's chest and a wave of warmness fell upon Jace. Clary against his chest reminded him of those times they would just lay together and enjoy each others presence. But this was not that. And in this exact moment, he didn't know if he would ever get a moment like that ever again. And Jace didn't care. All he truly cared about was Clary's wellbeing. "And call Magnus." Jace said to Izzy as he quickly made his way to the medical room.

"What on earth were you thinking?!" Izzy whispered to Jace as Magnus examined Clary.

That was the thing, Jace thought. He wasn't thinking. All that was on his mind was the he wanted to take care of Clary and make sure that she was going to be okay in her mundane life, but he never really came to the thought that he might be the one putting her in danger. Clary being safe from Matteo didn't change the fact the Clary was unconscious. It didn't change the fact that he had possibly angered the Angels and this was another one of their punishments. But then why the runes? Why give her her Sight back?

"Her runes being back could be a good sign" Izzy said, interrupting Jace's thoughts. "But her being unconscious could be a million other worse things."

Between keeping it his interaction with Clary a secret and Clary collapsing, Jace hadn't had the chance to explain to Izzy the whole situation that had unfolded the past few days. Jace began to explain, but came to a stop as he saw Magnus approaching them.
