luke woke up to the sound of his phone alarm going off for the fifth time. he grabbed his iPhone and turned the alarm off, laying his head back down on his pillow.
"fuck." he groaned as he finally rolled out of his bed. he walked downstairs to be greeted by his mother, liz. the only person who luke truly loved, as he felt she was the only person who loved him.
"good morning honey." she said, kissing his cheek. "i made you some breakfast. you need to eat it so you can take your medicine." she told him, placing a plate of scrambled eggs, toast and bacon on the table along with luke's bottle of antidepressants. "thank you. i love you." luke told her as he sat down. "luke, are you alright?" liz asked. "what do you mean?" luke wondered as he began eating. "it's just.. is the medicine working? i love you more than anything, luke, and i don't want you feeling that way anymore. it breaks my heart knowing my baby is hurting, and there's nothing i can do to fix it. i just want you happy." she told her son. luke looked at his mother with sad eyes. "i don't know. it's like i want to get better, but i can't. i want to be happy. it's just so hard. i'm trying. i really am. don't give up on me, please?" luke begged, tears forming in his blue eyes. "luke, baby, no. i'm never going to give up on you. ever. i'm going to do everything i possibly can to make you better. i promise. i'm always here for you. always." she told her son as she rubbed his back. "let me see you take your pill." she told him, handing him a glass of apple juice. he had a tendency to hide his pills in the past, and liz wanted to make sure he took them every day. "open up." she said, placing the white and grey capsule in her son's mouth. luke took a sip of the drink and swallowed the pill, opening his mouth again, and moving his tongue so his mother could look inside to make sure he took it. he did. "good boy." she told him. "i have to leave for work now, go finish getting dressed so you're ready when ashton comes to pick you up. i love you baby." she told him, placing a kiss on his cheek. "mum?" luke asked. "you're coming back, right?"
liz felt her heart sink.
"oh, luke. of course i am. you don't have to worry about me leaving. i know a lot of people have left, but i promise you that i'll never leave you. ever. i love you so, so much, okay? i promise." she told him as she held him close. "i love you too. have a good day at work." luke said. "have a good day at school, luke. call me if you need me, okay? i'll come get you if i have to." she told her son. "okay, i will. bye mum."
"bye honey, i love you." she said as she walked out the door, to her car.
luke put his empy plate in the sink and walked back upstairs to get ready. he went into the bathroom and brushed his teeth. as he was undressing from his pajamas, he sat on his bed, running his fingers over his scarred hips and thighs. he hated himself. he decided that was enough self-pity for a morning and went to his closet, pulling out a black t shirt, red flannel, and black skinny jeans, and then a pair of black vans. he put his clothes on and quiffed his hair. he looked at his phone, receiving a text from ashton.

luke smiled. he loved his best friend, ashton, too. ashton was there for him. always. luke loved that. ashton loved it too.

luke walked out, locking the door. he got in ashton's car, greeted with the best hug someone in the driver's seat can give to the passenger.

"you doing okay?" ashton asked. "eh. i guess." luke replied. "ready for hell?" ashton asked, pulling out of the driveway, in the direction of the school.
"ugh. never." luke said. ashton laughed, and continued to drive to the school.
