I held onto the handrail with one hand while mom helped me down the stairs. I heard a gasp and looked in the direction, both Dominic and Mia looked surprised as I made my way to the bottom.
"Everyone stay where you are!" my mom ran frantically back up the stairs, "I'm going to grab the camera."
I walked towards the siblings and couldn't help but smirk at their expressions.
"You look really pretty," Dominic whispered. I gave him a grateful smile, not only for the compliment but because he agreed to go to the dance with me.
I'm sure he had better things to do on a Friday night than go to a high school dance with me, it saved me the embarrassment of having to ask someone I barely knew and risk getting rejected.
Mia turned me towards her and fixed my hair, "you look so hot," she gushed, "you totally have a Jessica rabbit vibe going on right now."
That couldn't be right, Jessica rabbit was the hottest cartoon character. Almost all the guys we went to school with had a crush on her but I didn't blame them, she was pretty hot.
"Okay guys, smile!" My mom appeared again and held up the camera to her face.
Dominic automatically put his hand around my waist and gently pulled me to his side as he smiled for the camera.
Mia slapped Dom's hand away from me, "don't you get handsy with her, just because I'm in heels and a dress doesn't mean I won't beat your face in," she said in a low voice only we could hear.
Dominic put his hands up in defence then turned to me, "I'm sorry if I made you uncomfortable, Dani."
I chuckled and shook my head, "don't worry about it, you didn't."
Mom took multiple pictures of us, even dragging Derek from his room to be in some of them.
The doorbell rang and I assumed it was Kyle.
To my surprise, Kyle and Mia were still dating after 2 months. I thought for sure she would've been tired of his antics after a couple of weeks.
I still didn't like him though, he always poked fun at my red hair and made comments about ditching the glasses, as if I didn't need this to see or anything. What an idiot.
Mia and my mom made their way to the door to welcome the unwanted guest while I stayed back with Dominic and Derek.
"Are you sure you don't want to come?" I heard Dominic ask Derek, "I'm sure Dani wouldn't mind."
He looked to me for confirmation and I smiled, "not at all." Derek and I didn't get along all the time, but staying home doing nothing on a Friday night didn't sound too exciting.
"I think it could be fun, Derek," I suggested.
He shrugged, "Nah it's cool. I'm probably just going to veg out on the couch and meet you guys at the party."
"Suit yourself."
Kyle and Mia walked into the living room hand in hand with my mom following behind them with the camera.
"Now that everyone's here, let's take a group picture!" my mom waved the camera in the air.
We took a couple of pictures and just when I thought we were done, Mia grabbed my hand, "let's take a picture together, Dani." She looked at my mom, "its that ok, Mrs. Lennox?"
My mom put the camera back up, "of course!"
I stood next to Mia awkwardly not knowing what to do with my face or my hands.
