Good Grief

A/N: small update

Elijah waited for everyone to clear out before joining Vee in the bedroom, he walks in and sees her cradling their son.

"What was that about tonight?" he asks her.

She turns around confused, "Which part?"

Elijah shakes his head and comes further into the room taking a seat on the bed.

"I know you to be kind, forgiving, but it seems you are willing to go out of your way, out of all of our ways to enact some sort of vengeance towards my mother, for god's sake you attracted Nik tonight, don't you think that may be a sign you're behaving poorly?"

Vee takes his comments in and marinates on them for a beat.

Elijah exhales, "what is it about her that... does this to you?" He asks her taking a gentler approach.

Vee inhales Henrik's head calming herself with the sweet musky scent of her baby.

"I don't think you fully grasp what she has taken from me," she eventually says tears gathering in her eyes,

Elijah is confused by this, "no, I don't believe I do."

He stays quiet and waits for her to feel comfortable enough to continue.

"I miss my mom, and even if I do everything right, save the whole order of the universe," Vee shakes her head and squeezes her eyes tightly shut her thoughts just too unpleasant, "I may never get to hug her again, get to introduce her to her grandchild, how could I ever bring all the danger and chaos of this world to my family. I know you love your family Elijah but you don't understand I didn't just love my family I liked them. My mom and I could never understand other mother-daughter relationships that were hostile or competitive, we genuinely liked each other and loved being with one another."

She takes a breath before continuing, "Don't get me wrong Elijah, I am so glad I met you and I love you and our son but I didn't ask for any of this and maybe it wasn't just down to your mother why or how I was selected but I was and sometimes I really hate her for that."

Elijah takes this all in agreeing with her, he hadn't truly understood just how much she lost and his heart breaks for her.

He stands up and takes her and Henrik in his arms, "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry you have been carrying around all this anger and grief, I promise you won't have to carry it alone for another second." he kisses her forehead and she is able to relax against him finally able to release some of the tension she has been holding onto since Henrik's birth.

Elsewhere...

Klaus has sped away from Vee's apartment taking Rebekah's car, on the way further south from the town he calls in a favor from a witch, he was ending this tonight one way or another. He hoped in time Elijah would see he did it for him as much as himself, after all, how much of a daddy could Elijah play if Henrik's true father was still waiting in the wings.
