(Music really never has anything to do with chapters...if it does, then I'll let you know)
The grass swayed in the cool, light breeze. It was summer in Hudson, but it was different from New York. The sun peaked out from behind bright fluffy clouds. I looked out of my car window and noticed how different the outside was. There weren't buildings piling up on top of each other, just fields of grass and flowers for miles. Just flat and mysterious. I bowed my head and looked at the yellow lines that flew by as we drove. I sighed and threw my head back in my seat. "Adriana..." My sister, Lucy, started but then replaced her frown with a smile. "Hey, it's okay! Were gonna have a lot of fun out here!" She reassured me, putting a hand on my shoulder, the other sitting steadily on the wheel.
I groaned and slid farther down in my chair as she removed her hand. Nothing was going to be okay. I wish she would just shut up and stop saying that! It was really getting on my nerves. I closed my eyes until we pulled up to an old looking white fence. The paint was flaking and it looked like it'd been to hell and back. A boy about my age, ran over and pulled it open, his feet sinking in the mud.
"Were here!" Lucy exclaimed, waving a thanks to the boy and driving through the gates. "Damn, it's been so long since I've been here!" I rolled my eyes and crossed my arms. "You're acting as if you're some kind of first grader on Christmas. Calm the hell down!" I snapped, sliding my headphones over my chocolate brown hair that were twisted into curls. "Jeez, someone is in a mood." Lucy mumbled, unbuckling her seat belt. I hummed along to Space Girl by Frances Forever. "Oh come on! This is amazing!" I heard my sister yelled really loudly, considering I was blasting music into my ears.
My sister is nineteen and is pretty much excited about everything. Well, at least since Mom has died. It was kind of annoying, not going to lie. I mean it was like she never disappeared. My sister didn't seem to even notice any different, nor did she grasp on to the fact that our life was falling apart. Dad died in a car accident along with our twelve year old brother last year, and now Mom died a couple of months ago. I just wanted Lucy to be there for me and understand that stuff still hurts.
Then the door swung open and a short women with long brown hair ran out. She wore a flannel tucked into some lose jeans. She wore light brown boots and I watched them get splashed with mud as she ran over to the car. I opened the door and scrunched my face up at the dirty ground. I was wearing bright white shoes witch now I knew, was not a good idea. I winced as my foot was swallowed by brown, who knows what. I placed my next foot down and walked over to my Grandma.
"Oh my God! It's been so long! Too long!" She walked over to me and wrapped her arms around my shoulders. I smiled into her shoulder and let go. She walked over to my sister and squeezed the life out of her. Then our grandpa walked out and gave me a speechless hug. He pulled away, kissing my head and then moved to Lucy. "Wow, you guys are so big." He commented, a smile creeping among his face. "How old are you guys now?" I let Lucy go first as she stated she was nineteen, and then I told him I was seventeen.
He turned towards me and his smile grew wider. "I have a surprise for you, Adriana." I raised my eyebrow and he continued. "Luce," He began, calling her the nickname he gave her when she was little, "You can go unpack your things. Your room is in your Mom's room. But just your things, Adriana will grab her bags once I show her the surprise."
My Grandpa then started walking and I followed him. My feet scrunched in the mud and I started wondering if it was even mud. My frown deepened as I saw that we had some more mud--or whatever is was--coming up. The house we were walking around looked to be two stories. It was painted white--the paint flaking off just like the fence--and the roof was a light gray.
He turned into a barn, and we walked past about five horses until we reached a beautiful white horse. The edge of her nose was a pretty gray and so were her hooves. She wore a harness over her nose. She blinked at me and I smiled. "What's her name?" I asked, reaching to touch her nose. She looked at me, a bit nervous, but let me rub her. "That's your choice." I looked at him, shocked. Did he mean that the surprise was that this was my horse? "What do you mean?"
"Your Mom bought this horse...you were supposed to come here for the summer to meet her...but-" He stopped, smiling sadly. "She's yours now." I looked over at her, thinking about my Mom. I knew the name of my Mom's last horse who passed away after breaking a knee...Mom would've wanted this.
"Starly...I'll name her Starly."
