Keefe:

"My parents died in a car accident... And I was in that car..."

I didn't know what to say... If I knew anything about this girl, I knew she didn't want anyone feeling sorry for her. But me being the idiotic being that I am, I started to blurt

"Oh... I'm-" Sorry, yes it's lame but I was going to say sorry...

"It's not your fault, so you don't have to be sorry!"

"Still tho..." she shouldn't have to carry any of these burdens by herself.

"Keefe stop, I hate pity and I don't need it." I'm not trying to pity her, but I don't know what I'm feeling.

We were already at school and she got out of the car. "Listen, I honestly don't want to talk about my family right now. And I don't need you knowing my back story. So thank you for the ride but I got to go." She grabbed her backpack, slammed the door, turned around, and started walking towards the front office.

"Sophie! Wait!" I shut my door and ran after her.

"I have to go to the front office too... we're both late. And, don't get all sassy on me" My voice gave out so I whispered, "you're not the only one with family issues."

I grabbed her wrist when she tried to turn away from me and Sophie's eyes widened. For a second I could see all the pain and anger that had been bottled up. Then her lips moved but I couldn't make out what she was saying.

She looked down at my hand on her wrist, and with a louder but passive voice she said,

"Let. Go. Of. My. Wrist, Keefe." But my grip tightened even more.

She Looked right at me and shouted "KEEFE I MEAN IT" her voice was shaking and her body tensed.

"Sophie, you can't keep on carrying these burdens yourself! I know what it's like to have parents as jerks, ok? My mom got arrested when I was seven, and my dad doesn't even care about me. He only wants me to keep the family business up and running!" I lectured.

"Fine," She exhaled.

"Come on, Lets go get our passes."

Sophie:

"You're not the only one with family issues." Keefe grabbed my wrist, and I looked up to see his eyes. They were filled with so much hate and anger, but they also showed grieve and concern. Why does he care? He just met me this morning! It's not like he even knows me. All my pain, all my confusion, all my hate... he doesn't need to know any of it.

"let go of me" I breathed... but he couldn't hear me. I looked down at his firm hand on my wrist and whispered a little louder.

"Let. Go. Of. My. Wrist, Keefe." I But his grip tightened even more.

I looked up and him and shouted in his face.

"KEEFE I MEAN IT!"

"Sophie, you can't keep on carrying these burdens yourself! I know what it's like to have parents as jerks, ok? My mom got arrested when I was seven, and my dad doesn't even care about me. He only wants me to keep the family business up and running!" he looked me right in the eye and I could see that he cared. Like really cared... He wasn't telling me this because it's what everyone would say.

"Fine," I exhaled. I didn't even know I was holding my breath.

"Come on, Lets go get our passes."

Keefe:

The next few moments we a blur. We walked to the front office where the lady greeted us and said she'll be right with us. We waited for five minutes in silence, explained to the principal why we were late, grabbed our backpacks, asked what class we should be in, and walked out the door.

"Thank you..." Sophie mumbled.

"For what"

"Well for starters, thanks for giving me back my skateboard, and giving me a ride, and not pressuring me in the beginning to talk about my family. Also, thanks for not letting me get in trouble when the principal questioned us..." she played with her eyelashes again and I laughed when her cheeks got bright red.

"Haha no problem, well. I hate to go but this is your next class... Need a ride after school?"

"Sure" She smiled and a strange feeling filled my stomach...

"See you after school Foster!"

"Bye Sencen!" she grinned and squeezed my hand.

"See you later."

Sophie:

"Need a ride after school?" his words were kept on replay in my head. While I walked to my class. His voice wouldn't leave me...  I didn't mind any of the kid's stares while they saw me get lectured by my teacher about being on time. My brain couldn't comprehend anything I was reading. All the numbers flew off the worksheets I needed to do, when suddenly I couldn't take it anymore. I asked my teacher Ms. Oralie If I could go to the bathroom... and when I mean bathroom, I mean ditch...

I wandered around the school, hallways jam packed with posters and 'vote for me' signs. Light spilled through the windows and laughter echoed all around me, then I heard him...

"You lost?" I could hear the smirk in his voice while I turned around and saw ice blue eyes.

"Keefe" I breathed.

"Hey Foster" he smirked.
