Ilyas blinked at Ammu, squinting slightly in disbelief, and confusion. "I don't get it. If we're going to look at his prospective bride, then why isn't he coming with us?"
Ammu returned a genial smile. "He doesn't want to. Rayyan said he'll trust our judgement."
"So why do I gotta come along?" Ilyas replied back mulishly.
"Hush."
Ilyas looked back out the window. The surrounding was starting to look vaguely familiar. He was reeling over Rayyan wanting to get married, of his own volition, after scathingly rejecting all proposals in the past years. Now he was being bundled up to go check out his to-be sister-in-law. Who Rayyan chose himself. He closed his eyes. Seriously, this brother of his.
What was he even?
He thought back very determinedly, trying to remember any girls Rayyan had interacted with, only to come up blank. He knew Rayyan had liked to keep to himself in school, and throughout Primary and Secondary, he had a small friend circle that didn't change. In fact, one of his friends taught at the Madrasah Ilyas attended in the evenings.
Despite thinking long and hard, he couldn't come up any female acquaintances his brother had.
Weird. Did he, like, start dating her online or something?
Ilyas shook his head. No way. Rayyan's way too cautious for something like that.
"We're here." Baba's voice brought him back from all his speculating. He shook out of his thoughts, and got out of the car. The house in front of him froze him in his tracks.
He stared, then looked back at Ammu and Baba.
"Are we at the right place?"
Ammu gave him a puzzled look. Baba checked the address on his phone. "Yes." He quirked a brow.
"That house?" Ilyas pointed at a door which he for certainty knew belonged to Suhayl.
Baba nodded. "Is something the matter?"
"That's Suhayl's house." His voice came out laughingly high-pitched. Mind short circuiting. Wait, now that he remembered, Suhayl had an older sister, didn't he?
Ammu and Baba's eyebrows rose in surprise. Of course they knew who Suhayl was. Almost all of Ilyas' daily chitchat involved Suhayl. Suhayl had even visited their house once or twice, so Ammu had definitely met him.
"What a coincidence," Baba commented. "Shall we go in?"
What a coincidence indeed! Ilyas thought, looking wide-eyed at his friend who froze when their eyes met. Suhayl recovered admirably quickly, exchanging greetings with them and leading them inside the house. Baba and Ilyas took a seat at the settee while Ammu went inside.
Few minutes later, Suhayl came out with a tray filled with snacks and drinks. He took a seat next to Ilyas. Ilyas gulped.
Ilyas slowly turned to look at his friend, who was boring his eyes into him.
"What. The. Heck?!" Suhayl mouthed.
Ilyas shrugged. "Beats me, bro. This is a surprise to me too." He mumbled back.
