Merfolk are regarded as myths by most, although a few believe they are real. Real and dangerous. Cleo (a member of the pirate crew who sail on the famed ship The Red Winter) often thinks she's lucky they aren't real because what she's heard about them is awful- they're vicious murderers, basically wild animals despite their human-like appearance, they're cannibalistic, they drag humans under the water to drown them, they use their supernatural abilities to sink ships for fun. One of the people who's convinced merfolk are real is Cleo's captain Martyn. He's convinced the scar on his arm is from where a merling dragged him underwater. He often proudly tells the story of a vicious battle underwater where he had to stab the Merling in order to escape. Most of the crew, including Cleo, think it's just a very tall tale that he's insistent upon for some reason- the only ones who believe him are Mumbo, Jimmy and Impulse. But the rest of the crew still nods when he tells the story. Cleo's life isn't boring exactly but it certainly has a pattern- The Red Winter stops at an island or the location a map lead them to, they take everything worth anything, and they leave before consequences follow. This pattern draws to a halt when a freak storm hits The Red Winter in the middle of the ocean and the ship sinks, leaving most of the crew presumed dead. Cleo remembers only vague details of this event (thankfully), however she has other details to focus on. Like the Merling who rescued her. -- A Shadowrot Pirate AU.

Tango tries to focus on how the other person looks at this moment; he would love nothing more than to be able to meet his gaze, but all he can think about is Jimmy's cold, limp body pulled tightly against his warm one. There have only been a few occasions when Tango could see Jimmy look like he was at peace. In Double Life, he caught the avian asleep in the stables, surrounded by the comfort of the animals that reminded him of home. Or maybe they just wanted more of the wheat he had brought them. It's incredible, really. Despite trying, everyone that Jimmy doesn't want to know seems to know. The one person he wants nothing more in the world than to tell doesn't- his crush on Tango, who is currently asleep on the couch and inside the apartment that he is standing in front of. With a mix of their Christmas presents packed in the back of his car, it looks like they're already a couple. That thought scares Jimmy more than he'd like to admit.

Joel doesn't go outside much. Despite him being a respected florist capable of creating gorgeous bouquets, the sun didn't touch his skin often. It wasn't a rare occurrence when he spent the entire day researching flowers and creating bouquets, often forgetting to tend to his own basic needs. However, one day he got stuck. Team Rancher deals with the awkward sleeping arrangement of only having one bed, but it seems there's a lot more on Jimmy's mind than sharing a bed together. Jimmy swipes his right thumb across Tango's cheek, and the blaze hybrid tightens his grip on the avian's hips again, tracing circles on the front of his stomach with his thumbs. Jimmy uses his left hand to tuck Tango's hair behind his ear, "I love you so much." Tango's tail thumps behind him, and now that the appendage has made its presence known, he wraps it around Jimmy's right wrist. "I love you too." He thinks of beautiful gold shining in front of him, sunlight pushing through closed blinds, and honey so sweet it makes your teeth rot with a simple thought. It's smiling at him with a crazed look that he knows mirrors his own, high on adrenaline and in love with the person under his blade. He thinks of exploding for him, he thinks of killing for him, he thinks of dying for him. He thinks of a cooked meal getting cold, a missing soulmate, and invisible claws across his eyes.
