They met back during the Vietnam War. It was brutal for the both of them. Klaus Hargreeves had accidentally time traveled back to the war. That's where he found himself warming up to what he saw as a perfect boy named Dave. They fought together, drank together, and even shared a few little secret kisses. Even more was the fact that Dave did the exact same thing drugs did.

Klaus was one of the children of the Umbrella Academy. For years as a child he was abused in training. He had to get over his fear of the dead, especially since the dead were something he'd have to live with for the rest of his life. He wasn't too thrilled about conjuring dead people, and the only way to block them out was to turn to drugs.

The war opened the door of seeing dead people again, and there were a lot of them. Klaus felt like he couldn't escape. Not unless Dave was around. Dave kept him from seeing the dead. This lead to the both of them falling in love.
