'you can't drown your demons if they know how to swim.' so Brody was facing his. he had always said that he could not live with himself if he turned into his father, and he had done exactly that. he became his father, he turned into a monster, sacrificed and fought for the meek respect of a girl, whom he never truly believed was his.
Anna raced out of the doors after Brody, Anita and Ben close behind her. She managed to get halfway down the street before it happened, and a tidal wave of emotions brought her to her knees, stopping her from moving anywhere but to the floor.she sat motionless for a minute, processing what happened, until Anita approached her and tapped her on the shoulder. in that moment, Anna rose to her feet and sprinted to Brody's beaten- almost lifeless- body, laying at the side of the road. everything seemed to be going in slow motion as she lifted Brody's head gently onto her lap and tried to cradle him in her arms. it was just them, it was all they ever wanted, but something or someone always managed to get in the way. this time, it was the truck that slammed into Brody's unfocused and delusional body that got in the way because he stepped out into the road. that truck that ruined everything.
"Brody, Brody please don't leave me! i need you! i love you!" Anna pleaded as she rocked Brody rhythmically, trying to keep him awake and alive. he moaned slightly, wincing at the pain he was in.
"Anna.. promise me... something..." he managed to say between each harsh and precious breath.
"of course." She replied instinctively, barely audible from beneath her sobs and sniffles.
"Any.. thing?" he questioned, lifted his head slightly to look at her.
"yes, anything." She brushed his hair back off his forehead, he was in need of a haircut (which he was going to get the following week.)
"promise me.. that you.. will never... sacrifice yourself.. for someone.. cause' i aint goin' heaven.. and i refuse.. to spend .. eternity without.. you.." he grabs her other hand, that was laying across his chest, he gripped it slightly even though he hadn't got much strength left. She nodded in agreement.
"sure, i can promise you that. can you do something for me?" She asked, trying to keep a sweet smile on her face, but failing miserably with the worry and sorrow in her eyes.
"i dunno.. there isn't.. much i.. can do.. right now. .. i'll try." his chest was rising and falling sharply now, it was clear it was getting hard for him to breath.
"stay with me, Brody, just stay with me." Anna began to tremble, the sheer pain of losing the only person she ever loved, the boy who stole her heart, he was her forever and she had no doubt about that, she never wanted to let him go.
"Always.. here." He uttered in response, slowly raising his arm, shakily. he pointed to her heart. he dropped his arm suddenly, the simple movement, too much for him to fulfill.
Anita and Ben paced around the path a few yards behind Anna and Brody. she had just hung up the phone from calling the ambulance, the truck driver conferring with Ben, he was rather distraught. Anita has such mixed feelings, she began to feel dizzy. the pain; the guilt; the sorrow, all building up. the anger; the confusion; the stress. she was feeling sick now, all this couldn't have been good for the baby, she was only about a month gone, maybe two, depending on whether or not it was from the rape. she needed to sit down but she wanted to go and help Anna, but what could she do to help?
Anna tried to hold back the next flow of tears. she has failed, terribly. she didn't want Brody to remember her like this, a pathetic wreck. She wanted to be strong, she wanted to save his life, but she could do neither, only sit there, cry and hold his hand, tell him that everything was going to be alright because they were there together, and nothing could get between them.
"tell.. me.. a .. story.." Brody asked, his breathing very shallow now. Anna agreed, and tilted her head in thought of a story to tell.
"okay.. there was once a young girl, we'll call her Natasha. Natasha was about three years old when she first started school. she was so excited for her first day, to see and meet loads of new people. when she walked into class, she bumped into a few other girls she already knew. she laughed and joked with them, she even twirled around to show off her new pretty dress. little did she know that an adorable young boy had been watching her, ever since she stepped into the room. he had the most cheekiest personality and beautiful eyes. years later, Natasha and the young boy met again, confessing their undying love for one another, Natasha loved the boy so much that she couldn't bare to see him go. When the boy got sick, Natasha spent every moment with him, wishing he would get better and never leave her but he saw her pain and let her go. she could never love another man or live with herself for letting him go, so she k-.." Anna stopped, looked down at Brody and emotionally felt her heart split in two. she bent down and gave him the biggest hug she could manage. kissed him on the head and stood up, still holding his hand. she took one last glance at the smiling boy left dead on the ground, placed his hand neatly across his chest and ran to Anita, just as the ambulance arrived. Anna embraced Anita with a hug. when her hysterics were calmer, she turned to Ben and spat, "this was your fault."
