At school the following week, Anna approached Anita and Ben at break. She was not happy, in the slightest.
"you lied to me!" She exclaims, directed at Anita. "You said you could never go back there, not after the amount of pain he has put us in" Ben stands quietly at Anita's side, a smirk wiped across his face. Anna glares at Ben, forcing him to look away, down at the floor in shame. Anita replies, "I couldn't help it, i missed him. I didn't want to be alone. i didn't want to be sad. He makes me happy, surely you of all people could understand that!" A tear formed in her eye, teetering on the edge of her lashes, ready to roll down her cheek. Anna looked astonished. Her eyes filled with what could only be described as pure rage.
"WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU, HE IS CHARMING OF COURSE HE IS GOING TO MAKE YOU HAPPY. THEY ALL DO. PEOPLE LIKE HIM. MAKE YOU FALL IN LOVE THEN MAKE IT SEEM LIKE ITS YOU'RE FAULT THAT YOU DRIFTED APART. MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU PUSHED THEM AWAY. ITS PEOPLE LIKE HIM THAT.. that.." Her voice trailed off, Cracking as she welled up with tears but kept in the pain, "make it hard to ever love another..." she finished before she turned away, unable to stop herself from crying. Anita walked forward, to comfort Anna. She moved away from Anita's outstretched hand. "Don't. I don't want your sympathy. i want your trust, your friendship. But clearly i cant have that." Anita dropped her hand, giving a look that a child gives his mother when he knows that he has done something wrong but is unsure of quite what it is. "I'm confused, i do trust you.." she began. " Why would you think i didn't?" Guilt twisted her stomach, as if shes suddenly realized Anna's feelings. "if you trusted me then you would have listened to me in the first place." Anna flicked her fringe back to look Anita in the eye, glancing past Ben as if he wasn't there. "why didn't you tell me..." Anita asked, "I thought you told me everything, why wouldn't you tell me that you still.." Cut of by Anna who began, "So what? what does it matter what my feelings are. Nobody cares. Nobody ever cares. If i cant explain my own feelings what to say that they're even real?!"
"i care, of course it matters. Most real feelings cant be explained. like the world most beautiful occurrences, they have no explanation." Anita turned to Ben with a smile that read, i think we got there she will be okay with us.Anna looked away in disgust. "After everything, everything that we have been through. You still cant lie to me. You still cant make me believe what you say is true. You don't care. if you did you would answer this, who? Go on then who?" Anita looked at Anna with disbelief. "I'M SERIOUS. IT'S ME OR HIM." the ultimatum. Anita's face turned pale with pain. Her eyes showed no emotion, they were cold like all the life in her had just 'up, and ran away. Silence ran through the group. The shock had rendered everyone quiet. Brody had noticed the drama and began walking up the playground with a teacher. Anita's face reminded Anna of her dream. "You know the face your pulling now, its the same face that you had in my dream, the only difference is that in the dream you were dead. I now know what that means, Memories will always be there even when the person cant be. I knew you wouldn't chose, so ill do it for you. Have a good life, and don't come running when this (pointing between Ben and Anita) fails." she twirls round on the back of her heel to face Brody and teacher. "And what exactly is going on here? I don't normally hear this kind of behavior from you girls.." The teacher questioned. "Doesn't matter now, we're done." Anna answers before the tears plummet down her face. Brody leans in for a comfort hug, but she pushed him away and runs indoors. "i'm guessing this was more serious than it seems. I'll talk to you later Anita, we'll sort this out sooner or later." The teacher explains as Brody runs inside after Anna.
"Babe, it will be okay. She will soon come back, she will have to, she has no other friends." Ben turns to watch Brody chase Anna, "Unless, he admits his feelings..." The realization that Anita could have lost Anna forever, brought the life back into her. She was still pale but the harshness of her eyes had left and she turned to Ben but watched the pair run indoors from over his shoulder.
