"I won't be able to see him until Christmas and Mother's Day," my mom exclaims, tears running down her cheeks. "You're right, Jennifer, we'll get to face time him for an hour or two," my dad tells her.
We all get in the car, and start driving home. We all sit where we were earlier, and I am alone in the back.
"I think Shelby took it the most," Stacie teased. "Stacie Maria Thompson, don't make your sister feel any more worse!" my dad shouts back at her.
We finally pull into the garage of our big house. We all get out, but I'm the last one.
I slowly walk up to Stacie's and my room. I grab my phone, walk into the bathroom, lock the door, turn on the shower, and the loud fan so that no one can hear me cry.
I then feel my phone vibrate. Opening my eyes, I see that my phone reads, "Text from Ky."
Starting to feel better, I open up the text.
"Hey Shelby, are you ok?" it reads.
"No, not really. Colton just left to go to Anchorage," I reply.
"Do you want me to go and get a vanilla bean frappuccino, with extra whip cream for you?"
"Not in the mood. I just want to be left alone."
Then there wasn't a reply. Leaning my head back against the wall, I let the tears stream down.
A good hour later, I came down for dinner.
"Shelby, are you ok?" I hear my mom ask me. I didn't reply. I come over and sit down at the bar stool table, and burry my face in my arms.
"Oh honey," I hear my mom say. She walks over to me, and starts to rub my back. "You'll get to email him on Monday. That's only two days away." "I know..." I sobbed, my body shaking.
Everyone comes down, and sees me a mess. "Well, someone doesn't look good," Stacie says, folding her arms. "Stacie, go sit over there and be quiet," I hear my dad demand. "Fine," she groans, foot steps following her voice.
Somehow I calm down, and we all eat. This is the first dinner we don't have Colton. I look over to my left to where he used to sit, right next to me, but now it's empty.
After a quiet dinner, we all begin to watch a movie, except me. I go and sit in the music room.
I look out to the driveway, seeing lights on in my small neighborhood. I get up and start playing the piano. Colton and I would make up songs together, and sing them.
While playing, something catches the corner of my eye. Looking over to where it came from, I see a pair of headlights turn off. I make the outline of the car as a Ram truck. Emerging from the car is Ky, holding something in his hands.
He walks up to the door and rings the doorbell. I walk up to the door, and slowly open it. My boyfriend is standing there with a drink in his hand. "Here Shelby," Ky says quietly, smiling. I accept the frappuccino, and invite him in.
He gives me a big hug. "I don't want you to be depressed, Shelby. I want you to be happy," Ky whispers in my ear. Pulling apart, I look into his icy blue eyes. "Ky, I just lost my brother for two years. He has always been there for me, and now, he's not," I tell him, and I turn and walk back to the piano, and sit down.
Ky walks silently behind me, and quietly sits down next to me. "Do you want me to play a song?" "No, I'm alright." He then pauses.
When he opens his mouth to say somehting, Sam comes in, and screams, "Ky!" He then gives him a big hug. "Hey little dude, how've you been?" "Great, now that you're here!"
I then hear Stacie holler, "Wait, Ky's here?" She then comes running in, and gives him a hug. I roll my eyes because my twin has a major crush on my boyfriend. "Hey Stacie, how are you?" Ky asks, the words barely escaping his mouth because of the tight hug.
"I'm fantastic now!" she shouts. Ky somehow pried Stacie away, gasping for air. "Well, that's good." I couldn't help but laugh.
"Hey Ky, do you want to watch a movie with my family? We're watching a movie called 'God's Army.' I heard its great. It's about a missionary who is having a tough time being away from home, but he stays, and other stuff," Sam explained, tugging on Ky's arm.
"Ok, I guess I can watch it," Ky says. "Yay!" shouts Sam, running into the movie room, Stacie following him.
"Sorry about that, ever since Sam had that concussion, he sometimes acts weird, and can get really excited about the littlest things, and he also won't stop talking," I tell Ky.
"Don't worry," Ky says, leaning down to kiss my cheek. "He'll be alright."
We all got situated in the theatre room, and watched the movie. When we finished it, my mom started to cry.
"Chris, I wonder if Colton is going to go through this," my mom asked my dad, tears running down from the emotion. "If it does happen, he knows what to do," my dad said.
It was almost eleven when we all went to our rooms. Ky kissed me goodnight, and drove home.
That night, I couldn't stop thinking about Colton. I had a dream that he came home earlier than he was supposed to, surprising us all.
I woke up in the middle of the night, and I couldn't go back to sleep. I kept myself busy by playing games on my phone, then went back to sleep somehow.
