Quiet grunts broke the palpable silence, a cannon of springs crunching following after each sound. Leonardo sat breathless on the edge of the bed, muscles twitching in rebellion as he battled to stay upright. Thin hisses slipped through his teeth with every exhale he let sweep between clenched jaws. A gentle knock on his door made the bara jump, a sharp seething hiss tagged along with searing pain as his patched up side radiated with fiery agony.

"Uhmm... Leo? Are you okay in there?" Your voice rang through the thin shoji doors, concern woven into every syllable. Can't have Mr. Sexy Voice falling apart on you now, can we?

"Fine." He gruffed in response, another cranking of mattress springs making you a little less confident in his words.

"Maybe you should stay in bed." A hateful growl rumbled through the door as you chewed on your bottom lip. "I don't think Donnie would enjoy stitching you back up again."

"And you would be correct." The techie's voice made you jump with a small yelp of shock. Damn ninjas. He made a quiet apology that you waved away, your attention drawn down to your dog. You hadn't had the chance to see what happened after the surgery and you stood in stupid shock at the prosthetic limb in the original's place.

"Yo... you took my dog's leg?!" The big canine wiggled their way to your side, stumbling a bit as it flailed its new limb like a child showing off a new toy. A little "look what the giant talking turtle gave me to play with!" Donatello sheepishly smiled and nervously pushed up his glasses by the taped bridge.

"I couldn't fix the original with the damage it took. I would've consulted you, but you were asleep and it happened mid-operation. I couldn't leave a patient unattended on the table that's unethical in the extreme-"

"Donnie-"

"So I had to make a last minute choice and I figured you would want me to save as much of him as possible-"

"Donnie-"

"And the prosthetic he has now is just a temporary crutch while I make him one better suited to move and walk in. I have a few different designs planned out for you to choose from since I didn't really ask to take his leg off-"

"Donnie!" You stepped forward and placed a hand on his forearm. He paused his ramblings and looked down at you with big honey colored eyes. A smile pulled up your lips, the boy relaxing at the sight.

"I'm not mad, just a little surprised. Thank you for saving him." Donnie smiled brightly back, he wasn't used to being complimented on his work. The shoji doors to your left slid open, a huffing Leo emerging from his room victorious. Electric eyes flicked down to your hand where it was yet to leave Donnie's arm and you could've sworn you saw a spark of fiery emotion in his cold orbs. But you weren't sure exactly what emotion you could file it under, though. Before you could take the time to analyze it any further, Donnie had already backed up and looked madly around for an excuse to leave the area.

"Anyway, I need to gather some data on... that new mutant! Yeah, and reprogram my system to get a good track on the Purple Dragons. So... I'll just be going..." He turned and paused before whirling back around to face Leo, the eldest turtle quirking a brow ridge in questioning.

"Come by the lab in a few hours to get those bandages redressed." He nodded to say he would, the techie bara taking his answer as his dismissal and vanishing into his lab. Fur brushed the back of your calves as your dog sat obediently behind you. Turning towards the reptilian boy beside you, you could see it was hurting him to be on his feet. He had an arm curled around his stomach and every breath made him flinch in pain.

"You shouldn't be standing, Leo." Those glacial eyes locked to your face as you spoke, a small smile curling his mouth at your concern.

"I'll be okay." He flinched a bit when a stitch pulled too hard on the patched up skin on his side. Leonardo lowly hissed at the pain, the feeling of skin sliding across his bicep making him lightly jump and snap his head around to see that you had moved closer to ensure he was alright.

"You should really sit down." With a gruff of defeat, Leo nodded and prepared himself for the path ahead. It took nearly ten minutes to make the trek from his bedroom door to the living room couch. The leader of the group flopped down onto the ratted old couch with a pained groan. You sat down beside him as your tailing canine tucked up against the furniture a few inches from your legs.

Something about Leo seemed off, and it just clicked what it was- he seemed a lot less broad than usual. He wasn't wearing his usual gear and mask, which was all you'd seen him with up until this point. Leo in just a pair of cargo pants was a new rendition for you.

"I can feel you staring." His deep voice made you jump as blood burned through your neck and cheeks in embarrassment at being caught.

"Sorry, it's just the first time I've seen you without a mask on." Which was true, but not the entire truth. But he didn't need to know that you were checking him out too. Ignorance is bliss, right?

"Oh." Was all he could work out as he reached up to check that she was right and was sans mask. He felt a little naked without it. "Sorry to freak you out without it."

"Oh! No, no! I don't mind." Those three words seemed to have lifted a weight in his chest somehow. It shocked Leo that you weren't terrified of them in any way. Even when you guys first met, you seemed pretty calm and collected about being brought to terms with the fact that there were mutants hiding right under your feet. You just kinda... took it all in stride. He turned to face you a bit more, beautifully royal blue eyes boring into yours.

"Why weren't you ever afraid of us?" He blurted before he could stop himself. You lightly shrug in response as you contemplated your answer.

"I'm not sure..." he seemed to be getting closer as you spoke, "... I just kinda..." hot air brushed down your check and throat, "... knew..."

"Hey, Leo- oh.." Donatello's voice cracked the electrified silence between you two, both of you jerking away from the other. Leo blinked a few times before turning to give his full attention to his younger sibling. "Uhh... I just wanted to see if you could fill in the gaps on my data for that new mutant. But if you're busy-"

"No!" He cleared his throat to give him a chance to calm down. "Of course I'll help." He glanced over at you as you busied yourself with scratching P/N behind the ears. His long tongue lolled out of his mouth as he enjoyed the affections. Donnie shuffled a few times before stepping forward to offer his brother a hand up. The two moved towards the lab, but it wasn't until you heard the big metal door slide shut before you could let out the breath you were holding.

What was that?! We're you two about to..? No, of course not! Why would he find interest in boring little you?

Leo and Donnie sat in awkward silence behind the closed lab door. The multitude of screens flicked between the various cameras that the techie had hacked into. On a screen directly in front of them was the file he had worked up on the Purple Dragons' new mutant toy that ripped into Leo with haunting ease.

"Sooo... you wanna-"

"No."

"Okay, okay okay!" More silence. "But it looked-"

"Donnie, you brought me in to talk about the mutant not Y/N." The purple bara held up is hands in defeat before turning towards the computer screen. Sliding a keyboard towards himself, he cracked his knuckles and tapped on a few keys. As Donnie fired off a barrage of questions, Leo couldn't help but play that instant on repeat in his mind.

What was he thinking?! She's human! Even if he wanted to, it couldn't happen. They lived two very different lives in two completely separate worlds. Once they get the Dragons off her back, she'll go back to her happy life in her little apartment and chalk them up to nothing but a bad dream.

Leonardo was damned to watch from the shadows, while Y/N was blessed to enjoy the light.
