Graduation was right around the corner which meant Kankri would be moving out and I’m moving onto my final year of highs school (thank gog). Finals were next week and everyone’s been celebrating.

“So what do you say Karkat, you coming?” Vriska interrupted my thoughts yet again.

“I don’t know…” I looked to Gamzee.

“Come on Karkitty! It’s going to be so much fun!” Nepeta giggled.

“Wwoww Kar, nevver knew you wwere such a pussy.” Eridan chuckled, which earned him a smack by both Sollux and Feferi.

“Fine! I’ll go, jegus.” Everyone cheered and made final arrangements. I’m not entirely too sure what I’m getting myself into but, we’re all getting fake ID’s from Eridan’s brother for the bar tonight.

I didn’t go straight home after school. I began walking down street after street until I found the park I was looking for. It had a huge elm tree in the middle that overlooked everything else. I sat underneath the tree, leaning against it as I pulled my knees to my chest. I quickly looked around to make sure I was alone.

“Hey mom.” I pulled out the necklace I always wore. It was a simple cancer sign, Kankri and I both had one. Our mom made them for us when we were young. On the back she etched a little saying. Mine says ‘Don’t let anyone pull you down, you are meant to be a leader. I love you.’ And Kankri’s says ‘You are strong, you are meant to be a protector. I love you.’.

I gripped the necklace tight. “Things are great here. I wish you could be here with us. I’ve made so many friends here and… I think the guy I like might like me back.” I smiled softly. “I know you wouldn’t like what I’m going to do tonight but… I need to make my own choices.” I sighed. “I miss you… and…” I wiped my eyes. “and I love you.” I set my head on my knees and cried.

“Karkat?” a familiar voice called out.

Startled, I looked up.

“Hey KK, are you okay?” Sollux asked quietly. He sat next to me and wrapped his arm around me. I let him do this, which caused me to blush softly.

“I’m fine.” I wiped my eyes dry and looked out towards the playground.

“Why were you crying?” he asked.

“I wasn’t!”

“Your eyeth are red and I heard you thobbing.”

“I just…” I sighed, “I miss my mom.” I looked to the necklace before tucking it back under my shirt.

“I mith my mom too.” Sollux threw a weak smile. “It hurtth, and I don’t think I’ll ever fill the hole she brought with her but… thingth will get better.”

“Promise?” I asked softly.

“Promithe.” He smiled, a soft blush dusted his cheeks.

“Why are you here anyways?” I asked.

“Mituna needed me to come pick him up from the thkate park.” He chuckled and rolled his eyes. I laughed with him.

“So your gong for sure tonight?”

“Yeah, are you?”

“I’m not sure… Getting out of the house will be easy.” I scoffed.

“Plenty of experience thneaking out?” he smirked and raised an eyebrow.

“I used to live in the ghettos of New York City. You learn a thing or two in 5 years.”

“I mutht thay, I’m imprethed.” He chuckled.

“Looks like your brothers ready to go.” I chuckled as I pointed out his brother running towards us.

“Yeah…” he stood up and extended his hand. I took it and he helped me up. “Need a ride?”

“Sure.” We both smiled, a clear blush rested on our cheeks. Sollux dropped me off at my house at around 7:30. I thanked him as I stepped out of the car.

“Hey KK,” he rolled down the window. “Thee you later.” He winked and drove away. I couldn’t force the smile off my face until I walked inside. Kankri and our dad were sitting at the kitchen table waiting for me.
