Jack sat on the couch bouncing Lavender on his knee when Daniel walked in. Jack frowned. "You okay Dani?"
Daniel gave a tiny smile. "I'm fine Jack. Don't worry about me."
"Daniel... you can talk to me," Jack sighed.
"You're busy," Daniel mumbled.
Jack raised an eyebrow. "I can listen and play with Lav. I can put her in her crib if you want."
Daniel shook his head and ran upstairs. He was tired of lying. He was tired of life. He sometimes wanted to sleep and never wake up. He went into the bathroom and locked the door. He searched for a while before pulling a blade out from where he hid it. At first he just sat on the floor running his fingers down the blade. Tears filled his eyes and he began to get frustrated. He didn't know what was wrong. Biting his lip and swiped the blade across his wrist. Blood ran down his arm. He did it until his arm was too sore to do it anymore. He started on his left arm. Someone knocked on the door and Daniel jumped. The blade he was holding went too deep and he gritted his teeth to keep from screaming. He looked at the wound, realizing he would need stitches.
"Dani? Where are you off to?" Jonah asked.
"I wanted to go to the music store," Daniel lied.
Zach frowned. "Whatever."
Daniel got in his car and looked around. He pulled out the first aid kit and wrapped some gauze on his arm. "Dammit." He muttered as he realised blood had dropped all over the place.
After getting to the hospital he began giving the doctor his information. The doctor nodded. "How did you get this wound?"
Daniel shrugged. "I dunno."
"Look, you're above eighteen. Everything you tell me stays between us," the doctor said. "Unless of course police are needed."
Daniel winced as the stitches began to get put in. "I did it to myself."
"Why?" The doctor asked.
Daniel didn't respond and the doctor nodded. "This isn't normal procedure but I've had a daughter who went through this, so if you ever need to talk then here's my number."
Daniel took the card and smiled weakly. "Thank you."
The best few days were a blur. Daniel stayed silent, refusing to eat or socialize. Jack walked into Daniel's room. "Jack..." Daniel started.
"No Dani. I'm gonna speak and you're gonna sit here and listen until I'm finished. I'm worried about you. I don't care if you tell me you're okay. You're not. I'm tired of worrying about you. You're not eating or sleeping. I hear you crying at night. Daniel it's me. Your best friend. I'm always here for you. Please," Jack explained, close to tears.
Daniel stood up with a dangerous look in his eyes. "You know what? You're right. So don't worry about me. I'm done Jack Avery. I'm so done," he stammered and ran off.
Daniel turned on Jack's car and pulled out of the driveway. Finally, he parked at a secluded area and pulled out a gun.
Jack paced the house as he called Corbyn. "Hello?"
"Corbyn, I'm so sorry to bother you. I know you have a family thing, but it's an emergency," Jack stammered.
"What's wrong? You hurt?" Corbyn asked.
"No, but Daniel could be," Jack sighed. "I-I don't know what to do. I think Daniel is gonna hurt himself."
"Meet me at the beach in ten minutes," Corbyn said as he grabbed his coat. "Bring the others."
The group met at the beach and began looking everywhere when a gunshot sounded. Jack turned to Corbyn. "Came from there."
They hurried behind an abandoned building and found Jack's car. Daniel was sitting in it with the gun pointed at the windshield. "Dani has a gun. Where did he get it?" Jonah gasped.
Daniel turned the gun and pointed it at his chest and Jack froze. "He wouldn't..."
Jack raced to the car just as the gun went off. "No. Daniel!"
Zach grabbed a rock and threw it at the car window, watching it shatter. He reached in and unlocked the doors.
Jack felt for Daniel's pulse. "Forget calling an ambulance. We have to drive fast."
Jonah nodded and lifted Daniel into his arms. After laying him in the backseat, Jonah turned on the car. "Corbyn and Zach, meet us at the hospital."
Jonah slammed on the gas and the car sped onto the main roads. "Jonah. Don't get us into a crash," Jack stammered.
"I don't care how many red lights I run, we don't have time," Jonah said as he swerved into the intersection. "Left or right?"
Daniel moaned as he put his hand on the bullet wound. "Left," Jack said to Jonah as a police siren sounded.
"Dammit. I know I'm speeding but I can't pull over" Jonah groaned, praying the police car wouldn't try to block him.
Finally, he pulled into the Emergency Room entrance. Three medics ran out and put Daniel on the stretcher. Jonah turned to the police officer. "I'm sorry sir. It was an emergency."
"What happened?" The officer asked.
"Attempted suicide," Zach said, hugging Jack.
The officer looked suspiciously at the car. "There's a bullet hole in the windshield. You sure?"
"Yes. We tried to stop him," Corby replied. "He shot the windshield I guess and then we broke the window to get to him."
"Go see your friend. You won't get a ticket this time," the officer said and left.
