James' pov
I texted Maisie to know how is she doing. I really wish she is here with me right now. At least I won't feel so lonely with her around.
It's another hot summer day and I really needed to cool off so I decided to go down to the beach.
The beach is surprisingly not too crowded. There's a guy in a blue shirt selling ice creams, girls laying in the sun, couples playing in the water, a few kids playing on the sand, and a group of friends wearing wetsuit; probably getting ready to surf.
I didn't realize I was kind of staring at the group of friends until one of them came forward and spoke up to me.
"Do you want to join us?" the person asked me. It's a she and her face looks somewhat familiar.
Wait... she's the waitress I saw last night!
"Um, no thanks. I don't really surf." I replied sheepishly.
She saw my face and I realized that she probably recognized me as well.
She laughed. "Ah, don't think I don't remember you pretty boy. Sure you don't want to join us?"
"Yeah, I'll just be here and relax a little."
"Really? So you're just gonna sit here doing nothing, alone?"
My eyebrows furrowed. "Well, why not? I like being alone."
"Oh please, no one likes being alone or feeling lonely." She looked back at her friends then turns back to me. "Would you mind if I join you though? I can keep you company."
"I don't want to stop you from having fun but sure why not."
"Great!" she smiled. "Oh sorry, I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Hazel."
I already know her name because I saw her name tag last night but I won't tell her that. "Hello Hazel, I'm James."
After telling each other's name, we started heading to an empty spot on the beach. The first hour we just sat together and watched her friends surf. It feels nice to have a company like her, we don't need to talk and it doesn't feel awkward.
After that we only talked a little but it still feels nice because she's easy to talk to. I learned that she lives with her aunt, and she also paints which reminds me of my mom.
I told her that I was only here for summer break and then I'll be going back to uni. I don't really keep contacts of my old friends here and there are no other family members so I'm pretty much on my own.
After a while, her friends called for her to join them. "Guess I'll have to join them before they leave. Wait here, I'll be back."
I saw Hazel surfing between the waves, her brown hair clinging to the side of her face, her wetsuit tights to her body. I've only learned surfing once but Maisie doesn't surf so I never tried again after that.
