I am a Singaporean. It is a small country in Asia but it is a very updated place compared to our neighboring countries. The only thing that cannot be updated here is the language we use which is known as Singlish.
Our main language is English as we were bring ruled by the British colony after Raffles founded our country.
Then we have many different races in Singapore the four main races are Chinese,Malay, Indian and Eurasian.
The Chinese (also known as cheena our way of describing all Chinese is from China try to use the word discreetly as it is rude to say it openly to strangers.) has many different languages but the common language is chinese and the common dialect used or widely known among younger people is hokkIen.
The obviouslMalay y use bahasa malayu.
The Indians (also known as ah neh it cannot be used openly among strangers as it is quite racist) are people from India itself or people with mixed Indian tradition countries.
The Eurasian (also known as ang moh- direct translation is red hair in hokkien) is basically formed by people from people who come from areas that are not from asia itself.
Back to the main point Singlish is a mix of different languages and mostly filled with broken English. We can break sentences from 3 to 1.
Example
English:
Hello I am tom. I am here to collect my shoe that I had pre-ordered from this store 2 weeks ago . My shoe is green Mikey (can't use the name under copyright rules) and neon yellow stripe.
Singlish:
Eh tom here, I want to take my green and neon yellow mikey shoe that I chope 2 weeks ago.
It is quite easy to understand Singlish can be opposite wsys to say french.
We can say LA something or leh something to make it sound French. If we say something LA or something leh it becomes Singlish. Simple :)
You can try it out is you are not singaporean it can be quite fun saying it in your way.
I added a video of the use of Singlish during a simulation air battle in the Singapore air force. Made by Mr brown. You can type in Mr brown on YouTube to find his videos. They are mostly cover songs of big things that happened in Singapore but narrated or sung in Singlish it is quite entertaining.
