"Stupefy!" You shouted at an auror as a satisfied smile swept across your features. As the auror stumbled and fell with a thud, you allowed your chin to momentarily jut out as you glanced at their limp body on the ground. Pathetic, you thought, their skills left much to be desired. The gloating expression didn't last for long, not when flashes of color sparked throughout the destroyed courtyard you stood fighting in. You had to watch your back. This was a lesson you learned early in life.
You turned around and were being watchful of your next opponent. You weren't foolish enough to gloat a moment longer. You were well aware that no one was safe - not in war and not ever. Your teeth gritted as this thought brought on the ghost of the past. Forget him, you thought, the past is for those determined to set themselves for failure. You had set your eyes on another auror, one you had hoped would be as foolhardy as the last. You lifted your foot which was in a scuffed up leather boot when you faltered. The determination slipped away before you could try to grab it. This voice, even years later was enough - enough for your facade to break into two.
"Are you joking, Perce?" The booming voice of your younger brother Fred Weasley broke out. Fred had always been loud, but this was a battle and the sounds it brought on were louder than him at his very worst. And there he was, your brother, only a few yards away. He was close enough to hear, to see with Percy back to back in them. Your eyes softened unwillingly at the sight of Fred. Fred was laughing even in the face of war and all that it brought with it. Was he still your brother? Were any of them? You didn't have a family now, did you? Not after everything you had done.
It had been years since you betrayed everything your family stood for. The ink on your arm never allowed you to forget this. The sudden sound of a voice you hadn't heard in years broke you out of your mentality on the battlefield. You knew you should have looked away instantly but you didn't. Instead, you stood frozen as you saw your brothers not too far from you. You tried to pull your eyes away but it was a fruitless attempt. Your mind had rewinded through everything you had remembered - the sweet moments between the sense of being out of place and not belonging. And there was Fred, as he always was with a gleeful smile on his face.
Maybe it was the guilt or the love you still had for everyone you used to be able to call family. Maybe it was the smile on his face and the laugh spilling past his lips. It could have been the thought that a day without Fred laughing wasn't a world you could comprehend, let alone the thought of your twin brothers being separated. Truthfully, you didn't know why you did it but your feet were instantaneously unglued from their place in the crumbled asphalt as you ran forward at the sight of Rockwood's wand. You knew his game like the back of your hand and you saw the wall next to where your family stood fighting. Fear spread rapidly on your face as you ran as the twisted smile tuned in vileness spread across Rockwood's face. His lips moved subtly as he chanted the words of a spell you could not tell - not that you needed to when you knew his intention. Run faster, your brain chanted. Not your brother, your heart screamed. You had never run so fast in your life and had never been as terrified as you were at that moment. Your heart raced so fast your ears were pulsing as your throat was drier than ever before. As you ran your feet barely touched the ground. You pushed your way past people, not paying any mind to any curses that might have been thrown your way.
Your eyes were trained on Fred as you saw the top of the wall began to crumble. Your breathing was harder than ever and had trouble finding the time to breathe and you pushed yourself to move forward, not willing to stop now. The stones were just there waiting to fall as you reached him. Nearly leaping off the ground, you pushed Fred out of the way.
