Song for this chapter- My Heart Hurts by Dax
***
Saturday, 12 noon.
"I like the idea, but are you sure she wants me there? What if she's already going with someone else?"
My heart is racing, I don't fucking know why. But I'm pretty sure it's not because Kharise's friend just invited me to attend their school dance as a surprise date for Kharise. Definitely not.
"Trust me, I'm her only company to that dance. She doesn't even want to go but-"
She pauses, I hear her let out a sigh."-as much as I hate to admit it, she's happiest around you. Even I, her best friend can't make her as happy as you do..."
My breath is caught halfway up my throat. No actually I think I stopped breathing since the moment Layla mentioned her name. For reasons best known to my throat, because I have no idea why. Yeah."And if there's anything Kharise deserves, it's to be fucking happy. So do this. For her."
"Alright, I'll do it. I'm coming straight to the school, right?"
"Yeah."
"What time?"
"7PM thereabout."
"Okay, I'll be there."
I'm about to hang up, but then I realise I don't even know her name.
"Hey what's your name?""Layla."
She chuckles and I find myself smiling."Nice talking to you, Layla."
I hang up.I push off my bed and walk to my closet.
I'm sorta used to having my makeup/costume artist pick out all my costumes for concerts, photo shoots, music video shoots and the likes. Aside from those, all I wear are jeans and graphic T-shirts.
I can't remember the last time I picked out a costume for myself.I pull out my phone.
"Hey Jacqueline, I need a little help."***
"So you need a Halloween costume, non?"
Jacqueline asks in her dense french accent."Yeah, something simple, but not too plain."
I mumble, still sprawled lazily on the bed."Hey fucktard, you're outta Lucky Charms."
Ced barges into my room cradling a bowl of what I assume to be the last of my favourite cereal.
"Oh you gotta be fucking kidding me. Are you eating-"I stop, not mustering enough energy to handle the exhaustion of my lucky charms.
When did he even get here?
"Oh hey, Jackie. Wait, why is Jackie here?"
He questions, spooning the cereal into his mouth.Jacqueline grunts at him, before turning back to me. Ced could never really pronounce her name right, hence the name Jackie which she claims is common and desagreable, whatever that means.
