Song for this chapter- Easy on me by Adele
"I simply want to get to know you Kharise. "
You know how a single statement a person makes can completely change your view of that person?
Sometimes, someone can say something so foreign that you begin to second guess everything you know about the person and well, wonder if he or she is just joking and you are struggling to find the punchline in all of it.
Well maybe I'm blowing the situation out of proportion. But that statement you just saw was made by my very own father.
Yes. Carlos Garcia Grey.
I look around for any hidden cameras or booby traps and I'm very tempted to check his temperature just incase he is having a fever of some sort. You don't hear this sort of shit every day. Or at all. And definitely not on a Sunday afternoon.
"Kharise, your mother and I have been talking and we realised that we don't know much about what goes on in your life."
I scoff in response.
"Since when do you care?""Kharise." My mom says with a warning tone. I struggle to hold back an eye roll. And fail obviously.
My dad draws in a long slow breath.
"Look, mi hija, I'm sorry for a way I treated you. It wasn't fair to you and I wanna make up for it. And like I said, we barely know what you do, who you spend your time with. So we've come to a decision."He pauses and turns to my mom for support. She places a hand on his shoulder and he covers it with his. I have a feeling I won't like this 'decision'.
"Next week Saturday is your prima Marcella's birthday and Graciela is throwing a party. We plan on going and we want you to come along with your friends so we can get to know them, and hopefully you, better."
I look at them, thoughts scurrying through my mind.
Being the self-serving bitch that she is, Tia's events are always lit, and -you guessed it- brimming with full press coverage and fashion celebrities, be it a birthday or a funeral. She is a celebrity in the fashion world after all.I can literally bet anything that Layla would be ecstatic at the prospect of getting to meet famous fashion moguls from all across town. Honestly, I think I'll just agree to this for her.
"Why not? Sounds good."
I offer a small smile. My mom's expression is one of pure joy. She looks seconds away from squealing and hugging me and I figure this was her idea. Her beaming smile confirms it.
"Alright, I'll talk with Graciela."***
Twelve fucking times.
It would be nice to have a tub of chocolate icecream that number of times, despite the brain freeze.
Or maybe binge all the episodes of Money Heist that number of times.
A bit much, I know, but that's besides the point.
