Song for this chapter- Your Heart by Joyner Lucas ft J. Cole
"You could do one of two things. You could sit here, avoid Danté, the only person -apart from me of course- who has managed to make you happy despite everything you're going through right now, and let what Layla said continue to bug you. I mean, life goes on, right?"
Yana showers me with a substantial amount of sarcasm while I try so hard not to think about Layla and Dante fucking. I let my self fall for him again after the last time and this slaps me in the face. It's like the universe is just mocking me, not that that's new. It's a good thing he's not here right now, because I probably would have left through the back door and be halfway across the world right now. Yes, it's that bad.
I sigh, reaching forward to grab a chocolate donut from the rack of freshly baked ones and placing it on a plate.
I hand it to her. completely ignoring her previous statement.
"Table six.""Or you could just talk to him, K. You're obviously still crazy about him, so why not let him tell you what happened? Who knows? Maybe Layla made it up. She was pretty angry."
Yana turns and struts over to a nearby table, leaving me with my thoughts.I groan in exasperation.
Do I even really want to know if he actually fucked Layla? I mean, it's easy to just avoid them both for the rest of the year, or my life. Right?Who am I kidding? I'll probably still run into him at Range, or even right here. I would honestly just die if he walks through that-
The bell above the door jingled as someone walks in. I take in the blue baseball hat and the shades and I'm immediately bolting towards the break room.
Fuck you, universe!!!
"Grey!"
Oh fuck my life.
My sneakers literally squeak to a halt and I spin on my heel, coming face to face with my godawful employer."Yes sir?"
I paste on an overly sweet smile and desperately hope that he would just let me go. I could use a bathroom excuse maybe?"Where are you running off to? There's two customers out there and no one to attend to them. Now, I already tolerate your leaving early on Tuesdays and Thursdays and not even showing up on weekends. But if you don't want me to straight up fire you, I suggest you get your ass out there and be useful while you are here. Understand?"
I hold in a snide comment and huff instead, stalking back out.
Danté and his weird friend from the other day perch themselves on a nearby table. Yana walks back to the counter and I feel a glimmer of hope I prepare to plead my ass off that she handles the table. The universe doesn't even have to interfere in this one as the look on her face already tells the outcome.
"Yana, please-"
"Kharise, I'm feeling a bit faint. Could you work Table two?"
She says, not looking faint in the slightest.
