I woke up at sun rise the next morning. The sun rise was beautiful. The sky held pink and orange colors. The sun shone down making everything warm and colorful. I got down from my tree and went over to the river. I bathed and put on fresh clothes while washing the old. I took some money and started my trek into town. When I got there it was around nine so it was safe to assume no kids would see me. And get suspicious. It wasn't too small but it wasn't as large as a city either. I walked around admiring until I saw a help wanted sign in a little restaurant. I decided I would apply there and see if they would hire me. I walked up to the counter where a little old lady was working. "Hi I was wondering if I could apply for a job here?" The old lady looked up and smiled at me. "Of course dear just let me get the application." She came back with one and a pen. I sat at the counter and filled it out. I handed it back to her and thanked her. She told me I could check back in a couple days to see if I had got the job. I walked out and headed back to a little general store that I had seen on my way in. I bought some supplies and started my walk back home. I got back to my tree but I couldn't jump and hold my bag at the same time. Damn. I left the bag and climbed up and grabbed some rope I had. I tied one end to the tree branch and let the other drop to the ground. I got down and tied my bag with the rope then went back up and pulled it up. It wasn't a very secure system but it would do for now. Well now what should I do? I will take a walk I guess just to see what's around me. I left marks so I wouldn't get lost while waking. It was so calming I felt the warm summer breeze, the crunching of the leaves under my feet. I took off my shoes and kept going. Finally I came to a clearing about an hour after walking. There were flowers everywhere and the sun shone down on it. "Beautiful." I knew no one would hear me but I just had to say it. I stood there in awe for a few minutes but then I stepped in. I ran around laughing because of nothing. I was happy. Finally I dropped down lying in the flowers. They smelt so good the lavender and honeysuckle. It started to get dark so I unwillingly got up and started my walk back. I ate and went to bed.
Over the next few days I spent all my time in the meadow. I took in all the smells and sounds. I saw a fawn and her mother there. I watched in awe till they saw me and left. I wish I had a camera with me to take pictures of them. I was not talented in any means but I liked photography. I had taken a black and white class my sophomore year. I would be a senior this year if I was in school. Anyways I walked back to my tree not needing the markers anymore because I had memorized the path. The next morning I decided I would walk into town and see if I had got the job. I took some money and my new cell phone. At the general store I had purchased a pay as you go phone. I figured if I got the job I would charge it there or go into the town library to charge it. The restaurant was a cute place. It was red on the outside and on the inside was a counter and then a bunch of tables. The same little old lady was in here again. "Hi I was here the other day applying and I was wondering if I got the job?" She turned around and smiled then looked through some papers. "Your Aubrey right? Yes I am. Great and congrats on getting the job. Thank you so much Miss. Oh please call me Nancy. Okay." I am really happy I got the job. I was going to need the money. I would have to save p and get some clothes and things. "Aubrey here is your work schedule and shirt. Thanks. You can call me if there are any problems with your work schedule. Okay thanks and who owns this place if you don't mind me asking. No of course not and I own it. My father owned and now I do. I use to have a lot of people in here working but they left to go to college and such. So I decided I am not getting any younger and I needed some help. Well I am glad to help you see you tomorrow Nancy. Bye." I walked straight home not wanting to wander. Over the next weeks I worked and spent time in the meadow. It was a good life and I was paid well. I bought some new clothes and saved some of the money.
Today was Sunday and I was working. Nancy had gone in back when a group of boy walked in. I could tell they were jocks. They had the letterman jackets on and talked about hooking up with random girls. Players there everywhere. I turned and walked towards them but then I started thinking. Mike was my ex boyfriend. He was a jock and a huge player. I thought he could change and we dated. He cheated and that's how Steve and I met. He was my teacher and I came in with my eyes all red and puffy from crying. He called me after class and I broke down. He helped me and then it started to get creepy. "Hey waiter girl are you going to serve us or what." I looked at the jock all his friends were laughing at me. Just great. The one who spoke up looked like he was leader of the group. He had shaggy brown hair and was muscular from what I could tell. Stop! I mentally slapped myself don't think like that. "Can I take your order. Yes we will have burger and fries with coke. Is that all?" I asked, hoping it was. "No I would like you number too." That was not okay with me he can play other girls all he want but not me. "I am sorry but I don't give my numbers to player especially jocks with big egos." I gave him my coldest glare looking him dead in the eyes. I turned and walked away and placed there orders. I started back to their table with their cokes when I saw them talking intensely about something. Whatever but it better not be about me. They all stopped and sat back with smiles on their faces as they saw me. I gave them their cokes but as I turned to walk away the jerk started to talk to me again. I guess he can't take a sign. "I am sorry about before. I was very rude to say that." Blah, Blah blah. This was all bullshit and I just tuned him out. "Hey did you hear what I said? No I wasn't listening what do you want." I knew I was being rude but I didn't care. "I just asked if you wanted go on a date with me sometime. No thanks." His jaw dropped and hung open. "Close your mouth you don't want to catch flies." With that finally over I turned and walked away. Finally Nancy came out from the back and I begged her to take that table. She agreed and I worked the counter for the rest of the night. I closed up and was walking out when I saw the jerk standing there. "What? Why did you say no to me? Cause I don't want to go out with you. Well I guess I am going to have to try and change that then. Good luck then cause you going to need all the luck you can get." I turned and walked away then he shouted do I at least get a name? I yelled back no. I didn't need another stalker like person. The walk back to my tree felt longer than usual but when I was finally got there my eyes shut as soon as my head hit my pillow.
