"Maggie-"
"I swear you should have seen the look on professor's face when he read your email."
"Maggie-"
"Like, I don't think I have ever seen a man more red-faced in my life!"
"Lava!" George finally snapped.
"I'm gonna break your knee cap Founders, only one. It'll look like an accident and they won't be able to fix it." Maggie's annoying voice rang out of his speaker. He sat on a chair in the deserted waiting room of the hospital. He was here with Sapnap, who was here for Clay- Dream.
The voice of Maggie was familiar, and comforting in a way. At least someone didn't like him because she was a terrible person, not because he had been a terrible boyfriend. Everyone around him was mad, and for good reason.
It was his fault after all.
"I just asked for the homework-"
"Is that George?" Sam's voice could be heard in the background.
"Yeah, wanna tall to him?" Maggie said, the sound of her voice fading at the phone got passed over.
"Hey George." Sam sounded tired.
"Sam..." George's throat felt dry. "Why are you with Maggie?"
"Oh, I'm studying with her and Ponk."
"Oh? Ponk? How's that going...?" George tried to sound enthusiastic, but he flinched when he heard what Sam said next.
"Your boyfriend gets into a life threatening accident and is in a coma, and all you can think about is work?"
His chest felt tight, like a hand had grabbed his heart and squeezed. Sam only called to lecture him, that's why he opted for Maggie. He knew Sam's intentions were pure, he was just going about it the wrong way. George leaned forward on the chair, burying his face away in his hand.
"Sam..."
"I'm serious, when are you going to stop drowning yourself like this? Be present, be in the moment, even if it hurts. Be there for him!"
And suddenly, George was a kid again. Getting yelled at by his father, listening to his mother crying. Drowning. Was that what that feeling was? He used work as a clutch, a safe haven away from everything. Back then, being in the present meant getting attacked.
He drew in a shaky breath. "I know." He tried to sound strong, to sound normal. But the Crack in his voice gave it all away.
"George-"
And then he snapped. "I know! I know I was shitty, and I know the two most important people in my life could have been taken away from me! I know because everyone won't stop telling me! And now Clay might be brain dead, he isn't responding to anything, I may have just killed the only person that ever loved me back and I know I fucked up. So please Sam, please keep reminding me." Hot tears trickled down his face. He felt hot and also like throwing up.
George ripped the phone away from his face and hung up. Everyone was so against him. Even he was against himself. He tossed the phone down on the small table beside him and hid away in his hands.
He sat like that for what seemed like forever. Sapnap was taking his sweet ass time. He wanted go crawl under the covers of his bed and hide like a scared child. Because he was scared.
"One black coffee, no cream or sugar." George heard a voice say. He looked up and was greeted with the kind face of Vex, holding two cups of coffee from the Cafe, one extended put towards him.
"Plain and boring..." George sniffled, grabbing the coffee.
"Rough night?" Vex asked, taking his place beside him. Vex sipped gingerly at his own coffee.
"Rough lifetime more like it." George forced a laugh. "Thank you though..."
"Anytime, we all need a friend and coffee everyone once in awhile."
Hearing Vex say that, George had to fight back tears.
Vex and George had become quite acquainted over the past few days, each with their extended time here at the hospital. Eliza was to get released soon, and George would be driving out the Sunday after. Back to school, back to work.
"You doing okay...?" Vex asked after a quiet second.
"No..." He inhaled a shaky breath, feeling as his lungs expanded. "Everything is my fault... and I'm constantly reminded of that... and I just... it is my fault... Clay and Eliza are hurt because of me..."
Vex cocked an eyebrow at the mention of Clay's name. "Clay... as in Clay Blocc..?" He asked. And it dawned on George, he had never mentioned Clay before. It didn't feel right too.
George looked at Vex through blurry eyes and nodded. "You know him...?"
"Yeah... knew each other in high school... How do you know him?"
"He's my boyfriend- er- ex? I'm not... I'm not sure anymore..." George drank his coffee in silence for a moment, he never said it outloud before.
"Ah... I... see..." Vex muttered, clearly being distracted by a thought.
"George!" Nurse Lizzie appeared in the doorway of the waiting room. Her eyes were big and frantic, her breath clearly shallow has she had been running.
George sat up and stared at her. "What? Whats wrong?" He sat up.
"He's awake."
