All Work and No Play

Silver moonlight drifted into the dorm room through the thin, veiled curtains that hung over the windows. The light splashed down on George's desk, illuminating it in pools of pure starlight. It was nearing the middle of the night, the whole world around George seemed to be peacefully asleep. Well, except George of course.

He was hunched over at his desk, wrapped up tightly in his favorite hoodie and blanket, fighting the urge to sleep as he finished up the last few questions on his homework packet. He worked by the light of the moon at this point, Sam was fast asleep in his bed across the room, so George kept the light and noise down to a minimum as to not disturb his roommate.

The last few days had been better than the first. George found his groove of things, and he followed it to the letter. He never strayed too far from the path he had created. Though Maggie was still a bother to him, he ignored her, or as well as he could ignore the spite of her. She bugged him quite often, trying to drag him down with her sinking ship, but luckily George knew how to swim.

This is how most of his nights were spent, alone in the darkness of his dorm, force-feeding himself information. Even though it was quite possibly the most brain-numbing habit of his, it was effective, and that was shown in his grade and his grades reflected that. Just as expected, George had flown to the top of his class. But that hadn't come without its own sacrifices.

The quiet buzz of George's phone dragged his attention away from his studies. He grumbled in distaste, he had just gotten focused on his homework. His lazy gaze scanned his phone screen. A text from Clay

"I'll respond to that later. Homework first." George said to no one in particular as he moved back to working on his papers.

This was a common occurrence nowadays. George would actively dismiss Clay's text in favor of finish up classwork or getting an extra few minutes of study time. But that was just George's personality. All work and no play, right? So it should have been expected when George damn near dropped off the face of the planet to focus on his studies entirely

It's not that he meant to ignore the love of his life, George just understood the importance of where he was in life right now. George was sure Clay understood, right? After all, this had been George's dream for a very long time and he was so close to achieving it. So a timed-out phone call or a missed text message was surely understandable. Right? Right?

Not much later, George had finished up his homework with a satisfying end. He was damn near sure he aced every question. He sat back in his chair, leaning as far back as he could until he heard the snap, crackle, and pop of his spine. George reached out to his phone, shielding his eyes when the bright white blinded him. He had actually gotten several texts from Clay that night, George just only heard the last one.

George gave a small chuckle at the last comment of Clay's. He felt kind of guilty about not responding sooner, but Clay didn't seem that upset.

George pushed himself away from his desk and stood up, stretching his limbs. Plugging in his phone, George collapsed into his bed from exhaustion. He snuggled into his blankets and closed his amber eyes. Luckily today was a Friday, tomorrow he could talk to his boyfriend till his heart's content. He looked forward to it.

He slept in that Saturday morning. George allowed himself to sleep until he naturally awoke with the sun. The golden light broke through the pane of glass and landed right onto George's sleeping face. Begrudgingly, George rolled over to his side, shielding his eyes from the burning light. After a moment of debate, George rose from his sheets like a zombie from a grave.

The dry taste of sleep had long since stained George's mouth, causing him to lick his chapped lips. Seeking water to aid him, George got up from his bed. He noticed Sam was not there, a note in the kitchen area foretold that Sam had left to get breakfast from the local café. He got himself a glass of water as he checked his phone. It was still very early in the morning, barely reaching ten o'clock. George settled himself down on one of the stools that sat beside the counter.

Since it was not a school day, a lot of kids used this time to catch up on their social lives. George had no such thing. He would use today to get ahead on his studies, just like he always used to do. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

Clay was no doubt still asleep. Jeez, that boy could sleep like a rock. George bit his lip as he pulled up the text messages from last night. George had sent a simple 'good morning' text to his boyfriend and then tossed his phone onto his bed, where it would remain for the day.

George's day was filled with boring medical stuff. He talked to teachers and worked all day in the library. And never once did he check his phone. Not once, did the thought of Clay cross his mind. George was going back into autopilot mode. Resorting back to the way he was before Clay, before his mother's death, before his father's return; before his happiness.

George really didn't mean to ignore Clay, but all work and no play makes George a bad boyfriend.
