Once a month Funmi and her son go shopping at the mall and then reward themselves with some ice-cream. Sitting and enjoying the fruits of their labour, someone called Funmi. She looked behind her, she saw it was Alexander. An uneasy feeling rose within her, wondering why she was always meeting this man. Bankole looked towards the sound of the voice, he saw no light, not even dark light. There was nothing. Strange, he thought to himself. It was an awkward moment for Funmi. She remembered her dream that felt so real. She was having sex with Alex.
"Hi, Alex. What a surprise?" Funmi said.
Titi felt exposed and ashamed. She knew she was just being paranoid thinking that her son and Alex knew the contents of her sex dream.
"This is my son, Bankole." She did not introduce him to her son. There was no need for that.
"Hi, Bankole I am Alex a friend of your mother." He introduced himself to her son, engaging Bankole in a handshake.
"Bankole, could you please excuse me for a moment? I would like to have a chat with Mr. Alexander for a minute. You just finish your ice cream and we will sit close by. I would soon be back," Funmi explained.
Bankole tracked them by following his mother's light. They took the nearest empty table, three tables away. Funmi had to admit, she was strongly drawn to this man. Just looking into his eyes and she was hypnotized.
"Mrs. Ajayi, it has been a while, I had hoped you would have called me. I discovered that you were one of the clients of the Law Firm I just bought," Alexander remarked.
"Yes" was all she said, feeling uncomfortable.
"But why did you end your contract, hope it wasn't because of me?"
"No!" replied Funmi. "I mean; at the timeI did not know who the new owner was. I only realized it was you when I got home By then it was too late, I had alreadysigned the papers."
"Well, you could always sign my firm up to be your new representative. We would take good care of you, I give you my word," Alexander replied.
This man mesmerized Funmi. She almost agreed. One part of her so strongly wanted to yield to his offer, she wanted to give herself to him. This frightened her and that was what made her reject his offer. She had learned to follow her guts.
"I have no doubts that your firm will do an outstanding job, but I followed my guts."
"Do you always follow your guts, Funmi? And what does your gut say about me?" He chuckled.
Before she could reply, he took her hand. At his touch, Funmi melted like ice. She did not stop to wonder how he knew her name was Funmi.
"It's okay, I understood, you are right to follow your guts," He whispered with his smokey voice.
Completely entranced by Alexander, she looked at his lips as he talked. Just then he licked his lips as if he read her mind. She wanted him to kiss her. The hunger grew, now she wants him to make love to her right there. Alex let go of her hand and that woke her up from her trance.
We could start a new contract, we would not only be your lawyer but we would help you make even more money. I can make you very rich and be rest assured that your descendants will neverknow poverty. All you have to do is sign a new contract with my firm. You must think about the future of your son the same way your parent did for you. The stock markets are not stable, but I can assure you that my company is good at trading in shares you would never lose money."
She was sucked in, she believed him, "Okay, I will come by the office on Monday and sign up."
He then took her hand again.
"Thank you. You won't regret it. And I am sorry for interrupting your outing with your son with all this business talk. Why don't I make it up to you by cooking you dinner, at my place tonight? You may bring your son as well its fine, don't worry you can trust me."
She was just about to say yes, when Bankole came to whisper in her ears that he really needs to pee. Bankole did not feel comfortable with his mother talking to that man. He did not trust him, and somehow he felt his mother need help. He needed to get her away from that person. While they were in the restroom, Bankole told his mother that he was not feeling well, insisting they should go now immediately. In the restroom, Funmi felt a little relief. She was about to follow this man she had just met home and taking her son with her. She has even agreed to do business with him. Funmi was glad that Bankole came to her rescue AGAIN! When they got out of the restroom, Alexander was still waiting. She held her son's hand tight, walked up to him.
"Mr. Alex, I–"
"Please call me Alex."
"Sorry Alex, I am sorry my son is feeling quite unwell I need to take him home."
And with that, she walked away. He did not stop her. She still held her son's hand; she was drawing strength from him, for without him she might not have been able to resist Alex.
They both silent on the way back home, each lost in their thoughts. Alexander, Alex, or whatever had promised financial security of her son. On the other hand, there is this strong sexual attraction towards him, who says she can't have it all. Bankole felt a strong need to tell his mother about this man, it might mean nothing. She might not even believe him. But he had to say something because he thinks his mother likes this man. There is no better time than now to tell his mother everything. She can choose to believe him or not. He told her about how he saw people. Of course, he can't see their faces, but with the man she was talking to, he saw nothing. Funmi was shocked at this revelation.
"Why didn't you say something about this before, I mean about how you see?"
"I thought you would not believe me."
"I believe you Bankole, why won't I?" She looked at him, puzzled.
"Because you did not believe me when I told you I did not steal that girl's money," he replied.
For a moment Funmi was confused, she could not recall what he was referring to.
"And because of it, you beat me badly," he continued.
Now she remembered it was just about two months ago. So much has happened to them since then.
"I am so sorry, because of that incident you think I would never believe you. That case was different. The teacher found the money in your schoolbag, which is evidence."
"Did it ever occur to you that someone might have put it in my books to frame me?" Bankole asked.
"You are right. I didn't. And that is because it made no sense why anyone would," she replied.
"So it made more sense to you that I would steal the money. You did not trust me."
"You are right; I should have trusted you. You made it hard for me to trust you, though. I noticed a change in your personality. Well coupled with the fact that I was preparing for my exams. Anyway, you are right and I am sorry. I should have believed you and I believe you now."
For the first time in months, the two of them felt reconnected. It was a good feeling. They hugged each other and reaffirmed their love towards each other - mother and son.
"You say you see people as light. We should see the doctor tomorrow maybe your sight would return," she said.
He could hear the excitement in her voice, but he knew it was not the case. This was something else.
"Don't worry yourself about Alex I do not intend to have anything to do with him either, I am a bit scared of him as well."
