Chapter Fifty-three

"Wake up!" Daniel shook Emma's shoulders. "Emma, we have to go."

Connor paced the room. "I just finished talking with my dad and he says they're going to do surgery on him. There isn't enough time, they can't wait for him to wake up now."

Brian grunted and pushed Emma off the bed, not wanting to wait any longer. "Wake up!"

Emma coughed once she landed on the hard wooden floor. "Why the fuck-"

"Emiliano's at the hospital." Daniel pulled her up. "We have to leave. Now." He pulled her with them as they all walked out of the apartment, no one bothering to check if it was locked.

"Wh-What?" Emma's heart seemed to crumble up and prune. "Wh-"

"Let go!" They pushed her into the elevator.

She didn't know what to say. She didn't know what to do with her hands and feet as she clutched onto her chest and struggled to stay still.

"Gabriel's waiting outside."

They ran out of the elevator. Pushing the building's doors open, they immediately spotted Gabriel inside his car. He waved them over and they climbed inside.

Brian looked at Emma. Her eyes were red and her chest rose high and sunk like a dent.

"What-"

"He was in a car accident." Daniel bit his nails, something he hasn't been doing since the eighth grade. "I-I'm not really sure how it happened."

Gabriel drove past the cars and through the traffic.

Emma covered her face with her hands and then scratched the back of her head.

"It's okay." Daniel smiled at her. "He's okay. I mean . . . he's in surgery right now."

Emma seemed terrified. Her breathing became more rushed and looked to be like she was having a panic attack but she was scared and at the edge of a cliff.

She cried, not caring that they would suspect something. "Oh, my God!"

She covered her mouth with her hands. She let the tears fall and not fall as she didn't know what to do. The closer they seemed to get to the hospital, the more Emma cried.

"Come on." They helped her out of the car. Daniel seemed to be crying, too.

"I'll go park the car." Gabriel drove off after everybody got out.

"Where is he?" Emma walked ahead of them into an empty elevator.

"Where are they?" Daniel turned to Connor.

"The fifth floor I think."

"Okay, okay." Emma pressed the button, almost missing it and pressing the wrong ones with her shaky hands. "It's okay." She breathed in and out.

"It's okay." Daniel nodded, the whole time he followed the numbers at the top of the doors as they counted up.

Finally, on the fifth floor, they ran out again and were met by his family.
