Chapter Two
—Emma ran out of her walk-in closet with some black shorts and her white high-top converse. She was wearing a black t-shirt that had a band name on the front, and red flannel, long-sleeved over the t-shirt. Her brown hair was loose down her shoulders as her face was makeup-free like every other day.
She quickly changed into the shorts before putting on her shoes and grabbing her phone, usually having it on do not disturb.
Daniel texts her and tells her they're outside. She sighed and got off the bed before running out of her room and down the grand staircase.
"Mom! I'm going out with my friends!" she yelled loud enough for her voice to echo.
She ran out of the mansion and closed the door behind her. As she walked towards the car, Gabriel and Brian were both arguing about something that she chose to ignore.
Emma slid into the empty passenger seat. They stopped in front of the gates and waited until they opened.
"Who's party is this?" she asked.
"Uhm—" when she turned to look at Connor, his head was already looking over his shoulder to the other idiots in the back seat—"Shawn's."
"Oh." She tried to silence the sirens that went off in her head.
The truth was, Emma had lost her virginity to Shawn Miller on her sixteenth birthday—approximately a week ago. But she's never brought herself to return his calls or messages. She liked him—she was just scared that she might like him, and she was almost completely sure that would never happen.
Shawn was sweet and he whispered sweet nothings into her ear as he slowly rocked into her, over and over again. He was also a playboy, as cliché as that might sound it was still true. Nobody called him a playboy or a bad boy, though. They'd stick to 'The hottest guy in school'.
The car abruptly came to a stop and they were parked on the side of the road—right in front of the large house—Shawn Miller's large house.
"Is it okay? You'll be fine? We can just turn back and go to the diner if you'd like." Connor had his hand resting on Emma's shoulder as her attention was outside the window, examining the people that walked in and out of the large front door.
"No, it's fine. Let's go."
Her expression was masked with fake enthusiasm but the guys didn't want to get into it—for Emma and their own sake.
After they were inside the house, people were walking through the crowd and others were dancing to the music. The song, In My Head 'Till I'm Dead by Surf Curse, played through the giant speakers on either side of the chimney.
"Hello."
Emma didn't bother turning around as she recognized the voice and who it specifically was coming from.
"Hey," she said back with no actual quiver in her voice.
She felt someone ruffling up her hair and looked up. Brian was smiling down at her with the rest of her best friends as they left her and Shawn alone.
Shawn came and stood in front of her. She was startled and took a step back out of instinct.
"Hey," he said a little louder over the change of music.
She nodded once and took her gaze away from his. He kept his eyes on her, though. Never took them away when it came to her.
"I'm sorry," he said. "I don't know what I did o-or what I said." He seemed to believe something went wrong.
