Chapter 5: Sykkuno - Broken Promises

     I didn't hear from Rae again until that night.

     I was sitting on the couch, scanning through Netflix, when the phone rang.

     "I'll get it," I shouted. Scarra and Toast were in an intense game of Hearthstone and the rest of OTV were asleep.

     I picked up the phone. "Hello?"

     "Hhii, Syykkuuuno," Rae's voice came out of the phone, recognizably drunk.

     Oh, no...

     Rae only got drunk when she was going through some emotional turmoil. Not a lot of people knew about this.

     "I'm sooooo looonely..."

     That didn't sound good.

     "Aren't Poki and Janet there?"

     "They went out shoooopping."

     Oh god, her words were slurring pretty bad. "Um, I'll be there in five minutes if you want."

     "Yaaaaay!"

     I was greeted by the sight of Rae lying on the couch, a wine bottle three quarters empty beside her.

     "Hiiiiiii." Her eyes were moving in and out of focus.

     "Rae, are you... are you OK?"

     She turned a little. "I'm tiiired... but I want to fiinish this wiiiine..."

     Oh, no. "Um, maybe you should stop drinking..."

     "Let me finish!" For once, she was completely focused on the world. Kinda ironic on what she was focusing on.

     "Rae," I said more firmly. "C'mon, I'll get you to bed."

     "Nooooooooo-" Rae was kicking me as I gently lifted her up. She wasn't as heavy as I thought.

     I slowly walked up the stairs, her hair in my face the entire time. She had washed her hair with some sort of shampoo - raspberry, I thought. It smelled really good.

     Opening the door with one hand, I gently set her down on the bed, and was about to leave when I felt a tug at my sleeve.

     "Dooon't gooo..." Rae whined.

     "Um, ok." I sat down on the chair she used for streaming.

     "I'm cooold..."

     "Here, I'll get you another blanket."

     "No, wait... can you sleep with me?"

     "What?" My face was reddening.

     "Pleeeease... I'm really cold."

     "Fine."

     I lowered myself into the bed, turning away from her, planning to leave as soon as she was asleep.

     Instead, she wrapped her arms around me, and snuggled close to me.

     As much as I was embarrassed, it did feel really comfortable.

     I managed to fish my phone out of my pocket, shooting a text to Toast saying that I might be late, and laid there, waiting patiently for Rae to fall asleep.

     After what seemed like an hour, I tried gently to prise Rae's hands from my body, but she wouldn't let go. I was really afraid to wake her, so I stayed.

     Eventually my eyes started drooping. I fought off the presence of sleep until at last I dozed off, with the warmth of Rae against my back.

Do you know why this chapter is called broken promises? because I said yesterday I'd write two chapters in one day and I broke my promise :)
