The man's smile faded away quickly. His stern eyes darted back and forth between me and Sean. "Why are you here?" He questioned. "And who the hell is with you?"

"Hey, Dad." I then quickly covered my mouth.

"I told you many times before. Call me by my real name." He snapped, his icy glare frightened me.

Right... Dad wants me to call him Nathan because he feels ashamed and disappointed I'm his daughter. "Sorry, been some time now... Nathan." I hated that name.

"So what the hell do you want?"

"I came to tell you you're becoming grandparents. That's all." I quickly stuttered.

"You're serious?" His lips formed a smile and he laughed. "Someone actually loves you?"

I nodded, clenching my fists. "Yeah. This is Sean, and he loves me. I know it."

"How can you be sure? I could tell from the second I laid my eyes on him that he feels bad for you."

"That's not true!" Sean retorted.

He gritted his teeth at Sean, and back to me. "You're not wanted here. I told you the day you turned 18 that I want you out of here. I don't want a sin to stink up the house."

I bit my tongue. I have to stay calm. "Can't you accept the fact I'm bisexual? What's wrong with it?" Tears slipped out of my eyes. "It's not a choice... I'd change if I could, but I can't. That's just the way it goes."

"Can't you accept the fact that I don't ever want to see your face again? That's just the way it goes. In fact, I was surprised you had a boyfriend, not a girlfriend." He cleared his throat, regaining his calmness. "Now, excuse me." He went to slam the door, but Sean held it open.

"Why the fuck are you doing this?!" Sean blurted out. "I don't understand!"

"If you grew up with her, you'd understand."

Rage boiled inside me until another familiar face stomped towards the door, almost losing her balance. I could tell by her hair and ragged clothes that it's mom, who clearly never stopped drinking.

"You again?!" She slurred. The smell of alcohol made me dizzy. "Stay the fuck out."

"All those beatings and she never learned. She was always the stubborn type-"

"STOP!" I yelled, trying my best not to cry. "I thought I'd just want to tell you guys I'm pregnant, okay? At least have some goddamn respect for that."

Both of them stared. I couldn't tell if they were angry or shocked.

"I'm sorry you don't love me for who I am. No matter how many times I've said it, I'm sorry. But this is my life, and I could tell you right now I'm goddamn proud of it." My eyes filled with both sadness and rage. I don't want to look like an idiot that breaks down in the middle of an argument.

"What'd you say?!" My mom clutched the beer bottle in her hand.

"You fucking heard me." I prepared for the worst.

She held the bottle over her shoulder, gnashing her teeth at me. Dad formed a fist.

Instinctively, I put my hands up like I always did as a kid. The sharp agonizing pain hit my hand. Glass stuck out of my palm. The sight of blood dripping onto the concrete made me dizzy.

I didn't dare look up, but I sensed that Sean blocked the fist from my Dad. I heard a pain of agony escape from dad's lips and my mom running over to him. I whipped my head up to see Sean pouncing on dad, blowing a couple shots to his face. Mom tried to pull him off.

I stumbled towards them. I pulled Sean up by the collar of his shirt and dragged him away, but that wasn't enough to stop Sean from yelling insults.

"I hope that baby's damned to Hell!" My mom blurted out.

"Fuck you and your-" I yanked Sean forward before he could finish his sentence.

"Just get in the car." I whispered to him. He nods and got seated in the driver's seat. I scrambled in the passenger seat.

"Yeah, drive off in your shitty car, you cowards!" My dad called.

"Fuck you-"

I slammed the car door and we sped off.

*****

"Are you sure you're fine?" Sean gripped my shoulder.

"I'm okay." I nodded, rubbing the bandages on my hand. "Thanks."

"We tried." Sean shrugged.

"Yeah... I'm just going to bed." I stumbled towards the bedroom and shut the door behind me. The tears I've been holding in for so long finally escaped. I slid down the door. I tried to keep quiet, but I was wheezing for air. My eyes burned as I dove my face into my bandaged hands.

I hope that baby's damned to Hell!
You're not wanted here.
You again?
All those beatings and she never learned-

Time heals all wounds.

Weird. Why did Sean's words just pop into my head?

"Autumn?" I felt knocking at the door. "Don't feel upset about them."

I didn't respond.

"You're still a good person. You always have been. Don't listen to them."

I blinked, tears welling up.

"You didn't really have caring parents when you were younger, but that means you're more loving to your child than ever before. We'll both give that child wonderful parents that you never had. Don't you agree?" Sean sighed.

"Yeah," I sobbed. He's right.

"Remember that." I heard Sean walk away.

Through my cloudy eyes, I gazed at my bandages. He's right. I'm not hurting my children. I'll accept them for who they are. I'll steer them into the right path. I'll do whatever I can to protect them. I'll give them the opportunities I never had.

That's a promise.
