I woke up gasping, instinctively slamming the red button on the side of my bed. The baby's coming now, I just know it.
A red signal above the door outside flashed a bright red, alerting nurses and surgeons of an emergency. Doctors and surgeons flooded in the room, along with a tray of tools.
"Sir, we're gonna have to ask you to leave immediately." One of the doctors told Sean. I was gripping his hand in pain.
"No," he refused. "I want to stay- I need to stay!"
"Sir, this is an emergency. An operation. No one but employees and staff can enter until the operation's done." The doctor snapped.
I watched as Sean nervously stumbled out of the room. He took one more glimpse at me before he vanished around the corner.
The nurse took my hands. "I need you to look at me. Okay? It's going to be alright. We just need to prepare quickly."
They arranged a towel underneath my thighs and forced my legs open.
"Focus on me," the nurse squeezed my hand. "You must remain calm."
The pain had me in tears. I was afraid to cry. I was afraid to be seen in pain. I was afraid to give birth. I was afraid of pain even though I've felt it so many years before.

A snuggle of blankets were handed to me. Suddenly and magically, the pain stopped. All of it. I unwrapped the blankets to see the baby, who stopped bawling, gazing back at me with her blue eyes. I couldn't help but smile, even cry happy tears, at the baby. This was my born child. This child belongs to me and Sean.
The doctors, nurses, and surgeons looked delighted, inviting Sean in. He nervously and slowly approached me, beaming at the bundle of pink blankets. "You're alive..." Sean whispered, out of breath. "Oh my god, you're okay!" He sighed relief as he grinned, gently picking up the baby.
"Hey Sam," he cooed. "Welcome to our life."

We spent another night at the hospital, signing papers and documents. The doctors handed us an envelope before we fell asleep. "Here, it's official."
We pulled out Sam's birth certificate. "Name: Sam Elizabeth Kylie McLoughlin. Sex: F Was born in: Leinster of Ireland. on June 1st, 2015"
Me and Sean shared expressions of joy. He called his parents over, excited about our new daughter. I was far too tired for visitors, but I was anticipated to meet his parents.
His mom and dad arrived, along with Sean's brother, Tom. All of them were almost in tears at the fact they're becoming grandparents and uncles.
"So you're the one Jack has been talking about!" His mother gleamed. "He told us how beautiful you are!"
"And he's right!" Tom chanted, irritating Sean a little. He kissed my hand, making me blush intensly.
"Tom..." Sean sneered. Tom only snickered in response.
His dad held out his hand. "I'm Nathan. And you're Autumn?"
"Yes, sir." I shook his hand, facing his dark brown eyes.
"I'm Bridgette." Sean's mother greeted. She was so beautiful, even for a woman her age.
Nathan took the baby from Sean and stared at Sam. "This is my granddaughter?"
"Yup, hard to believe, isn't it?" Sean asked.
Funny. It is hard to believe. Months ago, we were so afraid of this day. We became more frightened as the days passed by but now...
"It is." Nathan choked up, rocking Sam back and forth in his arms. He passed the baby onto Bridgette, who cuddled with Sam while they all watched.
Sean and I gazed happily. "Look at them," I whispered. "No wonder you're so cheerful; you got it from your family!"
"It's all in the genes, baby." He rubs his arm jokingly.
The family before me looked so cheerful, so full of joy. It reminded me of my family before-
"So Autumn, how's college going along?" Nathan asked, sitting down in a chair.
My heartbeat dropped. "...Okay. I'm passing my exams and all..."
I sensed Sean signalling to Nathan to change the subject. I'm glad he did. I don't want to be reminded of that, especially in a time when a baby's born. Nathan looked puzzled, but didn't question it.
"Hm... I'm sure you'll graduate, like Jack." Nathan commented. "He took engineering. What a smart man he is, he can even build a PC!"
"Yeah, did I tell you I built my own computer tower the other day?" Sean asked, steering the conversation towards another topic.
*****
Sean said goodbye to his family and collapsed on the bed beside me.
"They're so nice!" I squeal. "Sam has some very nice grandparents, right Sam?" I tickled Sam's nose.
"I was thinking," Sean wondered. "...when Sam's older, maybe as a toddler or a kid, can she stay at my parents' house on Sundays? Just a little thought."
"Of course, then we'd have some time to ourselves..." I winked.
"Oh?" Sean chuckled, blushing a little. He intertwines my fingers with his. "I love you, Autumn."
"I love you too, Sean. I seriously can't imagine where I would be without you." I carefully lie Sam down between us. "And now we welcome our own little boss to the family."
Sean smiled, kissing the top of me and Sam's head. "Goodnight, you two."
I smiled back. "Goodnight."
