Back again. It's been just under two weeks since I've updated...I think. Anyway, here is the next chapter after a bit of a long wait. Enjoy.
Chapter 7:
My eyes shot open. Some loud banging had woken me from my pleasant slumber. Glancing around, I briefly remembered I wasn't at home anymore. That instead I was at the Petrov's house. I wasn't willing to call them my parents yet, if ever.
Bleary eyed, I hopped out of bed and walked out of the room. I stumbled to the staircaseto see a mess of food, plates and a very large metal tray sprawled across the floor at it's foot. A distressed maid was knelt beside it.
"What the hell is going on?" I asked. I'm pretty sure I looked a mess. My hair was mussed and my eyeliner was smudged since I forgot to take it off.
Alexander appeared out of nowhere, "Nothing, my Dear. Elise just slipped, that's all."
"Why aren't you wearing the nightwear I got you?" Lorna's gentle voice from beside me caused me to jump. She looked at me in confusion and eyed my PJ's with with distaste.
"Oh, um. They aren't really something I like to wear. They just aren't me." Her expression changed to one of understanding.
"That's okay. You'll probably get accustomed to them once you're married or finished your transition." Lorna walked off before I could answer.
'That's not likely' I thought to myself.
Averting my gaze to the chaos at the bottom of the stairs once again, I saw that the mess was almost cleared up. I decided to go and help the poor girl. She looked up in shock as I knelt down beside her and I smiled warmly in return.
"Miss, you don't need to do that. Go back to your room and I'll have breakfast up to you in no time."
"It's Elise, right?" She nodded "Well, Elise. One; call me Issae, not Miss. Two; I don't need you to wait on me hand and foot. And three; once we're done here, if you show me where the kitchen is I could make my own food and something for you too." I proposed with a smile.
"Oh no, Mi-Issae. I couldn't possibly." She protested
"Well, then I'm just gonna have to insist. You deserve it, Elise." She said nothing more on the matter and we quickly finished clearing up.
As promised, Elise showed me to the kitchen. I gained weird looks from some of the staff but no one complained about my presence.
I began rummaging through the fridge and finally, after deciding not to push my luck with fancy foods I had never tried, I re-emerged with three eggs. I then grabbed a few slices of bread and a frying pan.
"Fried egg and toast good for you, Elise?" I asked, turning on the stove. By now, it was only her and I left in the kitchen so I didn't need to worry about making anyone envious because I was making food for Elise.
"So, Elise," I started, whilst cracking eggs in the pan. "How'd you come to work for Lorna and Alexander?"
"My Mother and Father served under them. In this world you're born into the lifestyle you'll lead." She stated. I couldn't really tell if she was upset about it or not.
"How many different lifestyles are there?" I questioned, wanting to know more about the world i had been thrust into.
"From what I understand, it's quite similar to the human hierarchy system from the 1800s and even before that. There is obviously Royalty at the top, in which you'll soon be married into. That's then followed by Nobility, higher and lower. Your family are of higher nobility, that's why your hand was promised to the Prince. Then my family comes in. Working class I guess you could call it. Servants get paid well and have good accommodations in the house they serve in so long as they work hard enough for it." At this, I began to think about whether all servants were treated as well as they were here. "Finally, there is the poor. Those who rarely have jobs and if they do, they don't get paid very much. Just enough to live on."
"Wow, that's sounds really Medieval. Sort of." My eyes were trained on the pan again and could see the eggs had almost finished cooking. "Hey, could you push the toast in?" She did. "Thanks."
We lapsed into silence after that and the only sound heard was the sizzling of the eggs as they came closer and closer to completion. Once the toast had popped I jumped into action by grabbing all four slices and buttering them without hesitation. Then, a minute later, I had the eggs out of the pan and onto the plates alongside the toast.
We sat in silence eating the food I'd prepared, before a butler and a maid I hadn't met yet came in and ushered us out once we were finished.
The maid took me up to my room where I found Lorna and several other women waiting.
"Issaelya, dear! Come, we need to get you ready." Trilled Lorna, pushing me through the door with an exited expression. Mine howewver, was the complete opposite as it was a mixture of shock, confusion and utter despair.
The group of women that congregated at my door followed us in and surrounded me as I was sat in the chair by the vanity.
Finding my voice, I managed to ask, "Um, what do I need to be ready for?"
The women laughed, "You're meeting the Royals today. Well, except the Prince. He hasn't returned yet." Answered Lorna in a breathy laugh.
I cringed. 'Let the torture begin.' I thought with my face twisted into a grimace.
