The Servant

Chapter 3

On Saturday, the Duke and his family arrived. Chastity was certainly glad that she had chosen to stay in the crown princess' quarters. She hadn't been around the Duke's son for more than a few minutes, but he already bothered her. She didn't like the way he looked at her or the other servants that helped them.

Today, even though Helix wanted her to be with him all day and skip working, she chose not to. She thought it best to work some today so there wouldn't be as much work for the others. That's why she wasn't around the Duke's son for very long. She hadn't met him as they wanted to introduce her. She had run into him while she was doing chores and Helix was showing the son and his sister around the palace.

"Watch it, servant," The Duke's daughter said when Chastity accidentally ran into her. She could hardly see behind the huge pile of sheets she carried.

"Chastity, why do you have so many sheets?" Helix asked her, ignoring the daughter's attitude and grabbing some of the sheets from Chastity. She smiled gratefully at him.

That was another thing he only did for her. He helped her with anything she was doing, no matter what. He helped the other servants, but mainly the more elderly ones who he thought were being forced to do too much work. He hardly helped the younger ones as he believed they could handle their work load. That didn't apply to her. If he could help her with her chores he did.

"Thank you," She said, falling into step beside him. "The sheets need to be taken to Mrs. Larwson. She asked for some extra help as everything is chaotic today."

"Shouldn't you have greeted him like a prince? You're just some lowly servant. You need to treat him with respect." The daughter said.

"Actually, Miss Carey, she's my best-friend. In fact, it's more demeaning and disgraceful for you to treat her as you have then her so-called 'disrespectful greeting.' She's a part of my family. You need to treat her with as much respect as you would treat any member of the royal family." He told the daughter, Carey.

"I'm sorry," Carey said, looking over at Chastity. Everyone in the room knew that she still didn't mean what she said.

"Let it go, Helix. I'm okay. There's been no real harm done." She told him, smiling softly up at him.

"You already think just because you work as a servant it makes you nothing. I don't believe that and neither does my family. I don't want people fueling that ridiculous thought." He said as they reached where Mrs. Larwson was working. The elderly lady smiled as she saw Helix helping Chastity.

"Well, young Prince, thank you for helping bring the sheets that needed mending to me. It's a big help." Mrs. Larwson told Helix. "Thank you, Chastity, for helping me. I know you were hoping to be done early to spend time with your charming Prince, but it means a lot to me." This was directed to Chastity.

"It's not a problem, Mrs. Larwson. Is there anything else you need help with?" She asked. Mrs. Larwson shook her head.

"No, no, darling. You go have a nice day with your prince. I don't want to hold you up any longer." She said. "I mean it, you two go and have fun."

"We will, Mrs. Larwson." Helix told the woman. "Thank you for letting me have Chastity for the rest of the day. We'll be on our way now."

When they reached the gardens, Chastity and Helix holding hands, introductions were made.

"Carley, Daman, this is Chastity. She is considered part of my family after arriving here at the age of eight. She does work as a servant here, but that doesn't change the fact that she is to be treated with as much respect as you would treat a princess. Chastity, these are the children of the Duke, Carley and Daman." He introduced them all. Chastity smiled politely at them both.
