You've always loved the way the city looks at night.
Especially after it rains.
The twinkling lights of the buildings all around you reflect in the puddles of water splattered across the ground and there's something almost magical in the air.
This. This is it.
The sounds of nighttime traffic.
People going about their business.
The cool night air.
Neon lights.
You sit there on the edge of the roof and close your eyes, taking in as much as you can of this brief moment of respite while you are on patrol.
It's short-lived, however, because your partner's voice comes in through your ear piece. "Hey, kid."
You immediately go on alert, your entire body tensing up as you snap in response, "What do you want? I was vibing."
He lets out a short laugh. "Vibe later, we have a job to finish. I got an anonymous tip of suspicious activity near the station but I'm still a bit far out. I need you to go check it out first and see what we're dealing with, but don't engage."
You scrunch your nose in disgust upon being reminded that you have actual work to finish. "Aren't you supposed to be really fast or whatever, mister number 2 hero?" You roll your head back and look at the sky as you speak to him. "You're not supposed to need help from a rank 13 like me." Your lips inadvertently curl into a smirk and you swing your legs back and forth, waiting for his response. Hawks may be annoying as all hell, but you can't help but look forward to the back and forth banter between the two of you whenever you team up for patrol.
It keeps things... less boring.
There's an airy sound on the other end of the earpiece that almost sounds like a laugh and even though you can't see him, you can hear the smirk in Hawks' voice. "We're supposed to help each other out, kid. You know that was the agreement. We're partners, whether we like it or not."
"Well then. Guess I'm gonna have to file a complaint."
"Not if I do it first." Hawks shoots back and you let out a chuckle. "Alright, I'll go check out the station." Before he gets the wrong idea you quickly blurt, "Not because you told me to, but because I got nothing better to do right now."
"Riiiiight." He laughs. "Remember: don't engage."
You roll your eyes. "Yeah, whatever, Chicken Little." You don't even give him a chance to respond since you immediately reach up and switch off your earpiece before rolling your shoulders back and getting to your feet. "We're partners, whether we like it or not." You mock in an annoying high pitched voice that most definitely doesn't sound like Hawks, but it makes you feel better anyways.
You heave a heavy sigh.
"Stupid Endeavor." You mutter. "Making me work with frickin Big Bird." Endeavor had insisted you team up with Hawks. You're one of the most powerful pros under his agency and your raw power combined with Hawks' speed makes for one hell of a hero duo, but you never asked for any of this.
You became a pro in the first place to help those who couldn't always help themselves and do something, anything, to ease the suffering you saw around you, but now that you're here in the big leagues, you're not exactly having the best time.
You first interned with Endeavor your second year of high school and during your third year you went back for a work study. You were even blessed enough to have gotten a recommendation for Endeavor's agency as a sidekick right out of high school thanks to Mr. Aizawa and your previous experience. It made sense for you to spend so much time at Endeavor's agency since your quirk was also fire related, but now that you've become a full fledged pro working under him, it really disappoints you that most of what you've done were publicity appearances and regular patrol missions.
