I'm so so so so so so sorry for leaving this untouched for what feels like forever, I was having very bad writers block. This is the first of many chapters set with in the school. I'm not very happy with the chapter but I suppose it's okay
Cinder POV
I was excited... god that statement doesn’t even cover how I feel right now! I’m getting out even if it’s only six hours a day I still get out for awhile!
I can make friends...I can date people...go to parties...play sports! This will be amazing.
“Nervous Cinder?” My ‘father’ asked. We were driving down a little country side road and I think he’d noticed me bouncing up and down on the seat although it hurt a bit to do so.
“No daddy I’m just very excited,” I replied. Keeping my voice low as to be polite. He nodded with huge smile on his face like the proud father he was.
He put his hand over mine, running his long fingers over the bright metal hand cuff around my left wrist.
“That’s good baby. You remember what mommy told you this morning?” he asked. I nodded solemnly drifting back to the darling breakfast conversation.
“What did she say?” he asked.
“To keep my mouth shut about any noticeable bruises and keep all household secrets,” I whispered. He let go of my handcuff and nodded in approval.
“Good boy,” he muttered before cranking up the radio and speeding up.
*******
He took a sharp left and pulled up in front of the brick building. I stared at it knowing my eyes were probably wide in amazement. The metal of the hand cuff was biting into my wrist as I strained it to get closer to the window. He grabbed my arm squeezing hard enough to leave a bruise that would be hidden by the new hoodie I wore.
“Calm the fuck down! You can’t act like that around here!” He scolded. I cowered back into the seat as he raised his other hand threatening to backhand me right there.
“I’m sorry sir,” I whimpered. That’s the only time I call him sir...when I know I’m in trouble. He lowered his hand with a deep growl bubbling in the back of his throat.
“You’re lucky I can’t bruise you right before school,” he grumbled. “But after school you’re in for it,” I sighed in temporary relief as he released my arm and went to unlock the handcuffs. I took in a sharp breath as I heard it click open, it felt strange as it fell away. Whenever I was in public I was always handcuffed just to make sure I didn’t run away.
He knew I wouldn’t run by now, I mean, I had no where to go and if I didn’t die from nature they would find me and kill me then.
“Be good Cinder, I have friends in this school. Students and teachers alike so don’t you ever think for a moment you’re not being watched,” he said before handing me a brand new backpack and pushing me out of the truck.
I stumbled onto the pavement swallowing my former excitement as he drove away and left me in the parking lot.
I’m not sure how long I sat there. It was obviously too early for students to arrive because the silence seemed to be swallowing me and the empty parking lot was the gaping mouth of my demise.
I wasn’t expecting it when a little gold Buick raced around the corner closely followed by two Toyota Tundras. I do know my cars. I remembered all of his friends cars so I would know how much danger I was in.
The driver off the Buick whipped his car into a parking space barely twenty feet from me, from what I could see it was a boy at the wheel and soon he’d been boxed in by the two big trucks.
“Hey faggot! Why you running away I thought we had something special,” some blonde guy whined while climbing out of his vehicle. I couldn’t see Buick boy anymore but trust me I could hear him,
“Get out of here you assholes!” he screamed.
“Oh come on baby, don’t you want to see me?” The blonde boy pouted. His condescending tone stung me a bit more than it should’ve considering he wasn’t even talking to me.
“Leave me alone!” Buick boy yelped. They’d pulled the door of his car open by the sound of it and that was my cue to leave.
So I did.
I looked back once and by that time they had dragged the kid out of his car and had him by the collar of his shirt and backed up against one of the trucks. He turned his head and his eyes caught mine,
I quickly turned myself back towards the school with guilt churning in my stomach.
***********
“It’s about time you arrived Monsieur...”
“My name’s Cinder,” I said. The teacher glared back at me.
“En francais,” he snapped. I swallowed as his temper began to rise.
“Je’mapelle Cinder,” I muttered. I heard a few cackles rise up out of the class and turned my head to see a couple very pretty girls covering their mouths trying to hide their amusement.
“Well you can take a seat we’re beginning our work on congegating verbs,” the teacher growled not hiding his agitation in the least. I stood still for a moment taking in the full classroom in front of me.
“Hey! New kid come sit with us!” A girl with curly brown hair yelled. I slowly walked over with a smile that faded when I saw who else was sitting with her...Buick boy. A blush began to slowly spread over his face as the whole class burst into laughter...well the whole class excluding him and I.
“Nice to know you’ve already identified my car,” he hissed in my direction. My mouth fell open at the sight of his black eye and bruised cheek bone. He obviously realized his mistake and ducked his head. The girl smacked his shoulder and he mock glared at her as everyone settled down and got back to work.
“Give him a break Crispin, he doesn’t even know he said it out loud,” she said. She turned back in my direction and patted the desk between her and Crispin.
“Sit down he won’t bite I swear. he just has a nasty attitude today,” she murmured.
“I have a nasty attitude everyday,” Crispin replied.
“Aren’t you badass!” The girl exclaimed as she pulled me over to the seat and sat me down.
“Mademoiselle Kalea language!” The teacher snapped. She ignored him and kept talking to Crispin.
I jumped as the bell rang, quickly composed myself and scuttled out of the classroom eager to get to my next one and away from Crispin who was apparently my first enemy if that’s what was meant by his hostility.
Someone grabbed my shoulder making me freeze and causing my heart to skip a beat.
“Sorry to scare you Cinder, I was just wondering where you were headed next,” Kalea’s voice whispered behind me. I turned around and pulled my schedule out ignoring Crispin standing behind her.
“I have Geometry with Ms. Damon,” I said. Kalea clapped her hands with a huge grin.
“Great! Now I won’t be late to Brit Lit anymore. Crispin go ahead and go to Geometry with Cinder,” She said excitedly. Crispin screwed up his features at the suggestion.
“But Kalea they aren’t scared of him they’re scared of you,” he whispered.
“Crispin you’ll be okay they won’t do anything as long as you have someone with you,” She replied and pushed Crispin closer to me. “You guys have a good class and Cinder, don’t let anything happen to him,”
She sprinted in the other direction leaving me with a slightly upset and extremely terrified Crispin. I resumed walking down the hallway.
I looked back and to my surprise Crispin was following about five feet behind me. I walked a little faster and watched as he also sped up.
“You know if you’re going to walk with me I would appreciate it if you were up here with me considering I don’t know where I’m going,” I said politely. He sped up more and in a second he was beside me with his head down.
“Sorry I’m not used to showing people around,” he muttered.
Every ounce of hostility that he’d been holding in first period seemed to have melted off him as we pushed our way through the wall of sweaty guys and tropically scented girls to find our class. His eyes darted around and he kept at least a foot of distance between himself and everyone else.
He veered right into a classroom that I followed him into. He sat down at a desk and relaxed into the seat.
“Are you okay?” I asked taking the seat next to him. He eyed me cautiously but before he could answer a boisterous bought of laughter filled the room. I looked up at the new guests and saw the blonde boy from the parking lot.
He had girls flocking around him and his friends trailing behind him.
“There he is! What you in class so early for? Lose your little shield did ya?” He shouted. Crispin ducked his head,
“What’s wrong you don’t want to talk to us?” A girl chirped.
“No, I actually want to get through my class today, it’d be great,” Crispin muttered. The blonde boy stalked over and took a hold of Crispin’s hair pulling his head back.
“What was that faggot? You bein’ a little snot now?” He hissed. Crispin didn’t reply. I know I would’ve especially when you took a good look at this guy.
He was pretty threatening.
“Arightly class settle down! Jason leave Crispin be,” The teacher said setting her briefcase heavily down on the desk.
“Come on teach we’re just talking,” Jason whined as he released Crispin and plopped himself down in the seat behind him.
The teacher hurriedly began her teaching occasionally throwing a stern look to the blonde and his friends.
Crispin focused intently on the worksheet Ms. Damon had handed out while I stared at it completely baffled at the letters and numbers riddling the page.
“You don’t get it do you?” I looked to Crispin and sheepishly nodded in response. He raised his hand,
“Yes Crispin?” Ms. Damon asked raising her eyebrows.
“Ms. Damon Cinder doesn’t quite understand the work, I was wondering if I could help him with it in the hallway so he can concentrate?”
“Of course Crispin, take your stuff in case you don’t return,” Ms. Damon said with a warm smile. I followed Crispin’s lead grabbing my backpack and worksheet and following him out the door.
Crispin POV
I could feel Jason’s eyes burning into the back of my head as Cinder and I quickly fled from the room. I silently made my way down the hall trying to make it to the one place that didn’t make me want to blow my brains out,
The auditorium.
Don’t laugh, it really is the only place where students don’t openly hate me, the arts students all knew how to keep their opinions to themselves.
“Crispin, where are we going?” I jumped keeping my squeal of surprise safely concealed within my mouth.
“We’re going to the auditorium, I believe Mrs. Hopkins has freshman drama class right now so we’ll be welcome there,” I said. I never got a reply and had to look back I few times to make sure he was there, he always was and he kept his head down with the geometry sheet in his hand.
*********
“Well Well! Our Skeleton Jack decides he wants to join the commoners!”
I smiled lightly as the small women hugged me.
“Of course Mrs. Hopkins, I couldn’t stand being in that class another minute,” I said. She held me at arms length eyeing me until her gaze finally focused on my face. I knew the bruise was ugly, everyone so far had been ignoring it but I knew Mrs. Hopkins wouldn’t.
“When did they do this my poor boy!?” She exclaimed. She brushed my cheek bone with her little barbie doll fingers and I flinched.
“Oh that? This morning in the parking lot, I was running late so I didn’t get here on time,” I replied. She tsked and was then called over by a few girls trying to hold up the set that was falling on them.
“You weren’t running late, you were at school long before anyone else,”
I spun around to face the voice and some what smiled at him.
“For me I was late, now lets get down to that geometry shall we?”
Cinder nodded quickly.
**********
To say the least math was in no way Cinder’s subject, we had to go all the way back to middle school math before he understood anything. I was completely relieved when the bell rang and I was on my way to lunch.
“Crispin? Do you think I can sit with you guys just for today?” Cinder asked. I didn’t reply I just nodded and he seemed pleased.
“Hey! Guys wait up!” I turned around and smiled at Kalea as she ran to catch up.
“Hey chickie,” I said.
“Someone had a good second period,” she squeaked. I shrugged,
“We went down to the auditorium,” I muttered. She nodded in understanding as we made it to the lunch room and patiently explained to Cinder how to get his lunch.
“Haven’t you ever been to school before?” I questioned sitting my tray on the table and taking my seat next to Kalea.
“Of course I have! I just never get lunch at school,” he exclaimed. His eyes were big and I couldn’t even begin to think why he was acting afraid.
“Okay...well how about that hair of yours? Is it natural or what?” Kalea asked pointing her fork across the table at Cinder’s head.
“I was born with gray hair but by the time I was around three it had darkened to black. My parents missed the gray so they lightened it back,” he replied.
“So it’s permanent?” I asked. He shook his ashen head,
“We have to redo the roots when they grow out,”
An awkward silence filled our little table, an awkward silence that was soon filled by one voice I never wanted to hear again.
“Oh my god! You have more than one friend! It’s a miracle!”
I felt my body tense as his strong hand came down on my shoulder.
“Get out of here Jason,” Kalea growled.
“Come on Kalea, we may be siblings but you don’t have to be so mean,” He whined back. He put his other hand on my other shoulder and leaned down toward my ear.
“Besides you love my company, don’t you faggot?” he questioned.
“Don’t call him that!” Kalea screeched. Her voice drew the attention of nearly half the cafeteria and they were all eager to see what was going to happen. I glanced quickly at Cinder to see his reaction, his face remained so blank it scared me.
Jason drove his fist into my side making me teeter and wrap my right arm around my ribs. I heard Kalea stand up and then be slammed back into her seat making her squeak in pain. I sit myself back up and shot a glance at her. Jason’s friend had her by the shoulders and tears were in her eyes at his grip.
“Leave her alone,” I snapped. They ignored me and turned their attention to my other table mate.
“Must we restrain you as well Cinderella?” Jason asked. Cinder flinched then looked to me for an answer. I shook my head, I didn’t want them to hurt more people because me.
Cinder dropped his head and Jason laughed, soon followed by much more laughter.
“Well, no prince charming for you huh?” Jason giggled. Yes I said giggled, this whole situation made him giddy.
“Guess not,” I muttered keeping a straight face and refusing to look at either him or anyone else. He grabbed the unopened milk carton that sat on the table beside whatever kind of meat and gravy they were serving us. He didn’t say anything and neither did I as he opened the carton and poured it over my head.
Now milk, doesn’t feel like water, obviously it’s thicker and likes to spread out over your hair before dripping down your face and clothes. Now I wasn’t bothered by that, when I became upset is when he picked up my tray and dumped the disgusting school lunch after the milk. I felt it tumbling down the back of my neck to my white tee shirt. The room erupted in loud guffaws of amusement,
“It’s not that funny guys,” Jason said, his smug grin still plastered on his face. “I mean it’s just a stinking pile of garbage, why hasn’t someone thrown it out yet?”
I fliched and blushed a bit as he wrapped his arm around my gut, pulling me up out of my seat and causing Kalea and Cinder to look for escapes in panic.
“Someone roll me over a trash can would ya?” Jason asked. Of course the little minions of the school obeyed and they rolled up the plastic grey trash can that was already half full of disgusting school mush.
“Knock it off Jason! Seriously!” Kalea exclaimed.
“Please escort my darling sister out would you?”
And there goes my last hope, no one else wants to save me. Jason picked me up, roughly swinging me over his shoulder.
“Now we can take the trash out, anyone got anything else to throw out?” he said. About fifteen other students stood at his offer. Within the next minute I had been tossed into the trash can and other students had dumped their unwanted lunches on me. Tears had already pricked the back of my eyes and now they flowed freely down my cheeks.
“I hate you,” I whispered.
“What was that faggot? You love me?” Jason hissed. I stared directly at him,
“No Jason I said I fucking hate you!” I screamed. His face drained of color and for a moment I thought about apologizing, it seemed like I had actually hurt him.
“Good thing faggot if you’d loved me I’d have to kill myself from the embarrassment,” Jason laughed. I let myself slide deeper into the mess of the garbage can. Everyone was laughing at me, I don’t know why I put up with this shit it wasn’t normal. No one here loved me.
“Why do you call him that?”
The voice was a whisper that silenced the entire cafeteria, I peeked up over the trash can rim straining my neck to see everyone had focused their eyes on Cinder.
“Excuse me?” Jason replied
“Why do you call him a faggot? Because a faggots a bundle of sticks,” Cinder said. A few brave souls laughed but he was being serious.
“He’s gay, so he’s a fag,” Jason replied calmly.
“What’s wrong with being gay?” Cinder asked.
“It’s disgusting, and he’s more than disgusting than anything I’ve ever seen,” Jason growled back.
I was disgusting I knew I was, I managed to tip the trash can over and scramble out of it. I looked back once before I fled.
*******
The crawlspace below the stage in the auditorium was very col and very dark. It didn’t bother me though, I wanted to be alone and this was where I went for that. I’d heard bells for third and fourth period ring and I was patiently awaiting the final bell when there was a knock on the door.
I prayed it wasn’t Cinder or Kalea they didn’t need to se me like this.
“Jack, Jack darling schools almost over, it’s about time you come out sweet heart,” Mrs. Hopkins called. She wouldn’t call me by my actually name for the time being, she says I should stay in character.
I would never refuse when she asked me to do something which is probably why someone had sent her after me. With a groan I pushed myself up and ascended the stairs squinting my eyes when I opened it and light poured towards me. Arms wrapped around me and I blinked my eyes a few times to realize it was Kalea. I pushed her off and she stared back in dissapointment.
“Kalea, I’m disgusting I have school lunch all over me,” I muttered.
“So we see Jack, but you can’t run away like that, you’re little gray haired friend was very worried for you,” Mrs. Hopkins said. I looked around and saw him sitting in one of the seats as far off as he could.
“He certainly looks like he is,” I grumbled.
“He is Crispin, but he’s shaken up, says that this school is nothing like the movies he’s seen. He seems shocked by reality. He thinks you’re upset with him,” Kalea said “He took a nasty hit for you in the lunch room and he just sort of spaced out,”
Guilt swam in my stomach as I watched him closely. Watched him huddle in the seat. I walked towards him and when I was within hearing distance he looked up with a fear stricken face.
“Why can’t it be like the movies Crispin?” He whispered. Tears seeped through my eyes as he hurried to cover the bruise that held the cut of an all too familiar class ring.
“I don’t know” I whispered.Ta da! yeah writers block was very bad this time around :/ hopefully the next chapter is a lot better. The song for the chapter is 'Are You Happy Now?' by Megan and Liz. I hope Jason's happy he's so flip flacken mean
