Micah POV
The basement was closing in as it always did when I spent long periods of time here. They were all sleeping again. They did that a lot. Jeremy talks very little when we’re alone then again he talks even less when we’re all awake. Kalea talks too much and Jason doesn’t talk at all. It becomes increasingly lonely. No one has come downstairs since the first day and I knew days had passed. I could just feel it. Just knew.
“C-cinder,”
I turned my head and found Kalea blinking away her sleepiness at me. I nodded to let her know that I was listening. We were at least five feet apart. I needed my space.
“You got out last time didn’t you? How did you do it. What made you do it, I mean how long were you even here before you thought of leaving?” She babbled. She wanted answers. Everybody always wanted answers.
“M-monsiuer got me out. I co-co-couldn’t move after that last t-ti-t-time. I ne-needed safety. H-h-h-he brought me t-t-o Crispin’s. I was safe there. I was h-here since I was th-thr-three I guess. I had r-rarely left th-th-th-this h-house b-before I started sch-school.”I told her, hoping it would take the edge off of her curious appetite.
“Can we get out?” She whispered. I shrugged.
“M-m-mayb-be.”
Jeremy stirred where he slept making me jump and Kalea rush to him. He was mumbling furiously and seemed to be apologizing.
“It’s okay dear. It’s okay,” Kale murmured next to his ear. His healing eyes opened. That’s another way I knew a lot of time had been passing.
“He’s never going to get over this,” Kalea said as Jeremy had settled at her side.
“H-he w-will,” I replied.
“At the very least he won’t be able to forgive and forget,”
She continued as if I hadn’t spoken to her.
“I th-think you’re th-the one who w-won’t,” I stuttered lowly.
“I mean who could after a person did this to him. He barely even knew Crispin.”
My anger was at the top by now. Not only was she ignoring me but she had the nerve to sit there and complain about my boyfriend.
“Why is it suddenly so different now that Crispin’s not the one being hurt!” I yelped. Kalea’s eyes were wide but they burned as did mine. My stutter was gone, who had time to be nervous or scared when they were so angry.
“Do you not see what he’s done! He’s changed Cinder! He’s one of them now!” She yelled back. I covered my ears.
“He’s not! You don’t get it, I do. I know what pretending is here! And don’t call me that I’m so sick of it. Cinder, ha! That person can go rot in hell! It’s not me!” I hissed.
“What do you mean it’s not you,”
“That’s not my damn name. My name is Micah. Cinder is fucking nothing!”
“You’re Micah.”
“Yes.”
“So now Crispin fantasizes about fucking his brother,” She said. Her disgust clear. “Or has he already done that just like the sick fucking man up there!”
I snapped my head to her face, blushing madly and my teeth clenched. Her eyes were wide, I guess in shock of what she’d said. I hoped she felt bad.
“He doesn’t. He’s not my real brother. He’s fucking adopted.” I seethed. I turned my back to her ignoring the mumbled apologies she threw at me. That’s when I heard the door squeak open. I growled as the man came into view with the women behind him.
“Aw is someone feeling upset? Or are you just getting settled back into your animal ways?” He laughed. He stepped forward making me jump back instinctively. From behind his back he pulled a long dog chain that he jangled humorlessly.
“Stop messing with him hon. I want to get this going,” The women snipped. The man snorted in response but closed in on me. He wrapped the cold metal around my neck but I had to shake my head viciously to avoid hearing that stomach twisting click that would mean it was in place. That happened soon enough. No one was going to help me, they were all awake though, I could feel their eyes on me. The chain was far too tight and when he pulled it the part around my neck choked me.
“Everyone stand up and head upstairs. Single file,” The man ordered. There was only a moments hesitation before all three were on their way up. The man tugged the chain again and I went to stand. With another quick tug of the chain he brought me back to my knees. I got it. I was supposed to crawl. And I did. Awkwardly I crawled up the stairs and out the door, narrowing my eyes at the light. Everyone was gathered in the living room and Crispin made it a point to look at anything but me. I appreciated at least that.
Crispin POV
They had him on a leash. A fucking leash. They must’ve thought it would help in what they wanted me to do. Kalea and Jeremy were on the far side of the room shielded by Jason’s hulking form. It was hard not to fear me I suppose. The man dragged Micah forward and pushed the other end of the chain into my hand.
“Don’t fuck him up too bad boy. You’ll want him around for awhile yet.” He smirked. I felt the bile slipping up the back of my throat and I stared at the wall ahead of me. Micah shifted uncomfortably at my feet but I did not look down in fear I would enjoy what I saw. That’s a sick thought. I swallowed hard, I was completely fucked up.
I turned my head and glanced softly at Jeremy who flinched from my gaze immediately, leaving me in view of Kalea’s sneer and Jason’s threatening growls. I felt the chain jolt in my hand and looked down to see Micah curled in a ball with his stomach. The man stood above him his eyes glittering. The chain was pulling slightly on Micah’s neck, holding his top half slightly off the floor.
“Let’s hurry this along,” The man growled at me. I narrowed my eyes as the woman spoke from behind me.
“Now, now, let’s not rush things yet. Don’t you think they’d like to get this started in private, at least away from their friends,” She said.
I snorted. Friends. They weren’t friends if they couldn’t even see that I was protecting them. Maybe they were never my friends at all.
“Actual yes, that’s exactly what I want.” I stated. The woman nodded her approval,
“I expect to hear something hinting at results within the next ten minutes. If I don’t, well, you may just need a push to get started,” She said with a smile. I nodded and pulled roughly on the chain in my hand making Micah whimper harshly in response. I ignored it for the time being and forced him to hobble on all fours behind me until we’d gotten into my makeshift bedroom and I’d slammed the door. The feelings washed over me uncontrollably and I frantically dropped to the floor beside him and desperately undid the chain around his neck. When it had clanked to the floor I fell against him, my tears soaking his scrawny collarbone. His small arms wrapped around me without hesitation.
“I-I’m sorry,” I sobbed through my hysterics.
“I kn-know. It isn’t y-yo-you-r fault,” He whispered in my ear.
“It is though! I do everything they tell me. Everything! Look what its done! I had to hurt Jeremy and Kalea hates me!” I yelled. Micah silenced me,
“But you’re d-doing it b-be-because if you don’t th-ey could d-die,” He stuttered softly. I pulled away from him abruptly and ran my hands over my face.
“But-but I’m starting to like doing it,” I whispered as my face flooded with red hot shame. I watched Micah shake his head slowly with eyes that were just slits,
“N-no you don’t,” He pleaded. I had to push away from him as I nodded regretfully. His response was just as I’d feared; he crawled away quickly and tunneled himself under the bed. This time I followed him. I squeezed myself between the floor and box spring. I grabbed him before he could scuttle away and I cuddled him beneath the bed with no one but brainless, eyeless, dust bunnies left to watch.
“Y-you can’t like it,” He whimpered. A shiver went up my spine.
“Just because I find small joys in it does not mean I will hurt you to please myself,” I whispered into his dark hair. “I promise,”
“You can’t promise anything, there are no such things as promises nowadays.”
He said it eerily as if telling this secret only to himself. Footsteps clonked down the hall making us curl into a tighter lovers knot than we’d been in inside the tight space. Six heavy knocks landed on the door before it was shoved open.
“We’re not impressed,” The man announced. I pressed my face into Micah’s hair as he covered his lips with his small shaking hand.
The man trudged forward.
“Don’t hide under the bed. Don’t be surprised either. There aren’t many places to hide in this room,”
I detangled myself from Micah. He threw me a frantic look to which I only brushed off and motioned for him to stay where he was. I pulled myself from under the bed and into a standing position. I faced his squinted eyes with my wide ones.
“I won’t let you hurt him anymore.” I growled.A/N: So, instead of adding the ending into this chapter as I'd originally planned I'm separating them. This chapter is just the beginning.
