Cinder POV
(This is the scene that happened AFTER Crispin left because Bahvie wanted to know why the french teacher was there)
There was a knock on the door, mother and father walked away. I curled up into a ball on my side and pressed my back to the couch, hissing in pain as I did. The door opened and closed and three sets of feet were making their way back to the living room. I looked through slitted eyes to Monsieur Kabinett standing beside mother and father with a malicious grin splayed across his face.
“Are you ready for a little fun Cinderella?” he asked with a wink. I shook harder than I had been before and curled up tighter. Mother stepped forward and kicked my head sharply, causing me to throw my hands to my hair and momentarily uncurl my body. Father raced forward and grabbed me beneath the arms to haul me to the couch and pinned me their with his body.
“When someone asks you a question you answer,” he snarled. Monsieur chuckled lightly and leaned against the wall opposite the couch.
“Have you told him yet?” Mother asked.
“No but I’m telling him now obviously. Your mother and I are going away for the week and Jeff over there’s going to be keeping an eye on you. You’re rules are the same as always. Don’t talk back. Do what you’re told. Don’t try to run. And don’t tell anybody anything,”
I grimaced at his words and wiggled in his hold. He laughed and grabbed my forearms tightly making me squeak.
“Stop struggling I want to have a good night before we leave baby,” he purred. I growled in response, surprising father and myself. He brought his hand up to caress my face I let him get to the corner of my mouth and then I bit him. He screamed and jumped up holding his finger which, I presume, was bleeding because of how hard I’d bitten him. I scrambled to my feet and made a beeline for the nearest room with a door that locked, the bathroom. I heard a single set of footsteps coming after me as I ran as best I could with a limp. I reached for the door knob and swung the door open. I took a step inside and that’s when a pair of arms wrapped around my waist and pulled me back against a body.
“Do whatever the fuck you want with the brat! We’ll be back about the same time next week!” Father yelled. The front door slammed shut.
“You here that Cinder? Whatever I want. Now how about I bring you down to your new room and we play,” Monsieur said maliciously in my ear. He picked me up and I kicked out at the air while clawing at his hands clasped around my waist. He kept us balanced and opened the door to the basement before walking down the steps. We got to the bottom and he threw me to the dirty mattress that was laying on the floor. It was a better bed than the floor after all. He slithered on top of me and cupped the back of my head before forcing his lips onto mine. I stayed still. I let him do what he wanted because physical bruises are so much harder to lie about.
(You understand now Bahvie?:P)
Crispin POV
I didn’t sleep the majority of the night. My mom popped in and out with medications and a thermometer but I wasn’t sick. I was in shock, cruelty itself doesn’t shock me as it used to. Cruelty for no reason is even less shocking. So I shouldn’t be shocked at all that something bad was happening to Cinder. It was written all over his face from the very first day of school. This is probably how my mom felt the first day I came home from school with a black eye and bloody nose. Shock at how someone can be cruel to a person you love. I can’t love Cinder though because I’ve known him for less than a week if you don’t count the days he was out of school.
That’s what I thought about as I drove to school the next day. I couldn’t avoid him now. I mean he needs to be in the play with me and I have to get him out of his current situation. I turned into the school parking lot and turned my car off. I rested my head on the steering wheel mentally preparing my self to go face to face and hopefully confront him about the abuse he’s facing.
“Crispin!” I jumped and looked at my passenger side to see Kalea tapping on the window trying to get my attention. I unlocked the door and she slid into the seat.
“Hey chickie what’s up?” I asked with a false smile.
“Not all that much I was wondering what went on after rehearsal yesterday. I mean Cinder ran out, you ran out and then we didn’t see you again and you didn’t text back or pick up your calls or anything,” she fretted. There were bags under her eyes and a coffee was clasped in her right hand that shook mercilessly.
“Kalea look at me, I’m fine. I looked for Cinder and then went home and fell asleep,” I said apologetically. She glared at me,
“Cris you’re lying to me. You slept about as much as I did last night. I can tell. You saw something last night that you weren’t meant to see. I don’t know what it was and frankly I don’t think I want to know but don’t lie to me,” she seethed taking a long drink from her cup afterwards.
“You’re right Kalea. I saw something really bad and if I told you you’d probably throw up your coffee. It was disgusting and I feel horrible about not doing anything about it. I’m really sorry about worrying you and whoever else was trying to get a hold of me. I really am,” I reached over and took her left hand in my right one. She was crying,
“Jason came home drunk with a bunch of friends last night. Mom and Dad weren’t home and he asked me what was wrong. I told him and his friends laughed and said they saw you and that no one else was going to. I thought they hurt you really badly Cris,”
She took her hand back and wiped her face shakily with her sleeve.
“I know you’re sorry and I realize that it’s not your fault. We should go in now before Jason gets here,” she said with a weak smile. I nodded and we got out of my car and walked into the school.
“So, are you going to tell me what happened? Or is it really that bad?” Kalea asked as she bip bopped down the hall.
“It’s...absolutely awful. I can’t even stomach the thought of someone doing that to him,” I whispered.
“So it’s something about Cinder? Should we be asking him about it? I mean he’s sitting in the cafeteria right now,”she said. I stopped in my tracks,
“Are you kidding me? I thought they’d have kept him home,” I said my voice jumping an octave in surprise. I didn’t catch Kalea’s reply as I ran off towards the cafeteria. I burst through the door making the group of cheerleaders next to it jump up and rush away chirping like a group of birds. I looked around wildly until I found him sitting in a corner with his eyes closed while he muttered something to himself. I ran over and hugged him tightly. He trembled slightly,
“W-what’s wrong Cri-crispin?” he stuttered. I let him go and touched his hair lightly.
“Nothing’s wrong I’m just happy to see you that’s all,” I said. He nodded and smiled lightly at me.
“I thought you were mad at me,” he whispered so I could barely hear him. I cupped his cheek and made him look at me.
“I could never be mad at you,” I whispered back. I wanted to kiss him but the moment wasn’t right. He bit his lip which, I couldn’t help but notice, was swollen and split.
“Thanks,” he muttered. The bell rang and I helped to his feet while Kalea jogged to our side.
“Come on mes amis we have to make it to french on time,” she said while tossing her empty styro-foam cup in the trash can. Cinder flinched noticeably and grudgingly followed us from the room.
Cinder occupied the seat between Kalea and I once more. It made me smile, but I have to ask him about last night soon. That was sure to mess everything up. He was doing a good job of hiding whatever it was he was hiding though because even kalea wasn’t seeing through the mask he’d put on. I saw though. The bell rang and we bid Kalea good bye for second period. I pulled Cinder to the side and held him against the wall by his shoulders.
“Where did you run off to yesterday?” I asked. Cinder flicked his eyes to my face and then to the floor uncomfortably.
“My...dad picked me up?” he said. It sounded like a question rather than an answer to my question.
“What happened when you got home?” I whispered. He looked at me wide eyed and reached up to attempt to cover his lip and any other bruises that may be poking through the layer of blush that was applied on his face.
“W-we just hung out...watched a movie...normal stuff you know?”
He was fidgeting and his eyes were beginning to water.
“That’s not what happened...I know it’s not. Can you tell me what really happened? Please Cinder?” I pleaded. He shook his head sadly and I released him. When I did I applied pressure to his shoulders and he ended up being pushed harder against the wall. His bottom lip trembled slightly and his eyes stared widely up at me,
“I’m sorry...Crispin I’m sorry...please don’t be mad at me,” he whimpered. I sighed grabbing his hand and pulling him to me.
“I’m not mad. No worries just tell me yes or no to the question of what I saw last night was real,” I said. He stared me dead in the eye,
“No, it wasn’t what you think,” he said strongly. He betrayed himself when his hand started shaking. He was lying to me. I nodded at him though and before the day ended and I had to go home I slipped him a piece of paper with my cell phone number, house phone number, and my address. Just in case he got tired of lying.
