Chapter 11: Surprise
Cinder POV
After rehearsal I ran out to the teacher’s parking lot and gleefully jumped into Monsieur’s blue Jeep Cherokee. He spun his head around when I shut the door and put out his cigarette in the ash tray in between us,
“Seems like somebody had a good rehearsal,” he mumbled with a slight chuckle. I nodded my head animatedly and bounced up an down on the seat.
“Jesus Christ Cinder! What the fuck did you do to your hair!” He yelled after a closer examination of me.That killed my excitement and I twisted a strand of black hair between my thumb and pointer finger then threw Monsieur a skittish look,
“I dyed it for the play,” I muttered. Monsieur rolled his eyes and started the car,
“You can come up with a lie for that to tell your parents,” he smirked. I shrugged and glanced out the window,
“Monsieur, when are they coming home anyway? How much time do I have?” I asked cautiously. Monsieur didn’t say anything which made me turn and raise an eyebrow,
“Monsieur?”
“Cinder, you know they said they’d be back in a week. They usually make good on their times of arrival and departure. They should be back today,” he whispered. I didn’t say anything after that, what could I say? They would be coming back, maybe they were back already. I felt the silent tears begin running down my face. I can’t handle this. I felt the car pull over and a hand grasping my shoulder, it made me jump and whimper,
“Breath okay baby? you have to breath,” Monsieur whispered in my ear. I shook my head crazily and gasped to get air to my lungs.
“I c-can’t, they’re going to k-ki-kill me-e,” I wheezed. I leaned forward clawing at my chest desperately.
“No Cinder, I won’t let them kill you okay? Believe me,” Monsieur murmured while rubbing circles on my back.
“H-how can you be-e s-sure?” I questioned.
“I have a plan,” he said clearly before pulling away from me and continuing to drive. I tried to deepen my breathing and calm down enough to not bring unwanted attention to myself at home. We pulled up to the house about ten minutes later, my parent’s car wasn’t there. I sighed and the tension in my shoulders released me from it’s tight grasp,
“What am I going to do?” I asked myself. Monsieur undid my seatbelt and got out of the car to open my child locked door for me.
“You’re going to act like you normally would around them. Be a good boy,” Monsieur said. He had a hold on the collar of my shirt, Trying to put me back into the character of a prisoner. He brought me into the house,
“Do you need anything? Something to eat, drink?” he asked. I shrugged,
“How long will it before I can come upstairs again?” I questioned back.
“With them just coming back they’ll do about two days I guess but with what you did to your hair I’d say your dad will bump it up to a week and a half, maybe two,” he muttered. He sat me down at the island and began bustling about the kitchen. He pulled out a bunch of boxes and packages and pots and pans,
“I don’t need anything Monsieur. Really I don’t,”I said while tracing an invisible picture on the marble table top.
“Be quiet okay? Just go watch t.v. Cinder, I’ll cook something and then we have to get ready for your parents,” he said. I nodded at his dominant tone and got up, went to the living room and slumped onto the stained green couch.
