Taylor set her things on the floor with a heavy sigh as she walked through the front door. She followed the sound of clattering dishes all the way into the kitchen, where she saw you standing at the sink cleaning them up.

"Hey, darling." She spoke, smiling to herself as her bare feet padded over to you. "Where's Carter?"

"In bed." You grumbled. "It's late, Taylor. He had to go to bed."

She detected the bitterness in your voice. She was close to putting her arms around before so she could bring you into her warm embrace but sensing how upset you seemed she retracted her hands.

"Why are you upset with me?"

You scoffed and turned off the water before turning to face her.

"Why do you think? This is the sixth day in a row that you've come home late-"

"I'm sorry, but I've had things to do!" She defended.

"I know. I know you have a busy job and a lot going on right now. But this is the third night in the row that you've let him down. Remember what you told me last night? That you felt bad for not being able to spend time with him? Or that you're tired of missing dinner? Or that you know Carter wants you to be the one to tuck him into bed at night?"

She put her hand on her hip and clenched her jaw.

"Carter was so excited to see that you'd be home tonight for dinner! But you didn't show and even worse, you didn't even tell me that you weren't coming home."

"I was-"

"Busy! I get it." You huffed.

"You act like it's the end of the world, y/n. You know this is my job! I have so much going on at the moment and I can't just drop everything!"

As she raised her voice, you had tears welling up in your eyes.

"I don't expect you to! It's not just about me, Taylor. Carter needs you. I understand. But he misses you!"

"What the hell do you want me to do, y/n? I have deadlines for these songs and I have to finish them!" She yelled.

You both went silent. Unsure of what to say as you tried not to let your anger and heartache get the best of you. But just as the silence hit the air, you heard a sniffle come from the staircase and both of you turned quickly to find Carter there in tears.

He hugged his stuffed bear to his chest; the one Taylor got for him. He rubbed his eyes tiredly, tears spilling down his cheeks. At only four, he was sensitive and afraid of losing you both somehow, someway. His bottom lip trembled and you and Taylor both felt a rush of guilt and sorrow upon seeing him so heartbroken.

"Carter." She whispered sadly. "Buddy, I'm sorry. Come here."

But as she tried to approach him, he stepped back. He was awoken to you both yelling which was something you never did and, understandably, he was startled to see you both so angry.

"No." He mumbled but as you both climbed the steps slowly but surely, he didn't run away.

"Baby," she whispered and brought him into her arms. "I'm sorry. Did we wake you?"

He nodded as he laid his cheek against her chest, his warm tears falling to her skin.

"I'm sorry, my little man." You whispered as you sat on the step beside Taylor, combing your fingers through his hair. "I'm sorry we scared you."

"Don't go." He cried, snuggling further into Taylor. "Don't go." He pleaded again and Taylor felt a lump in her throat, feeling as though her heart shattered right in her chest. She rubbed his back and laid her chin on his head, gazing over at you as she said,

"I'm not going anywhere. Not ever. I promise."

She kissed his head and watched you smile sadly.

"It's alright now. No one is mad anymore and no one is gonna raise their voice from now on, okay? Trust me, buddy. Everything is just fine."

You laid your head on her shoulder and took a few minutes to comfort him until his tears stopped and he was smiling a little as he drifted off to sleep.

"Wanna go to bed?"

He nodded tiredly against Taylor's chest.

"Mommy tuck me in?"

You nodded but he shook his head, putting it back on Taylor's chest again.

You realized he meant Taylor and you watched her smile brightly. She stood carefully and carried him into his room. Laying him in bed ever so gently, she sat beside him and brushed her fingers through his hair.

She lulled him to sleep by humming along to 'happiness' and laying kisses to his head. Once she knew he was sleeping, she turned off the light and turned on his favorite nightlight.

"Goodnight, buddy. I promise I'll tuck you in tomorrow night, too. And every night to come."

She closed his door and walked across the hall to your shared room. You sat on the bed, picking at the polish on your nails nervously. She sat beside you wordlessly and laid her hand against your thigh. Her touch told you that everything was gonna be okay.

You crawled into her arms, laying your head on her shoulder as her arms wrapped around you.

"I'm sorry." She whispered. "I know you're right and I knew you were right as soon as you brought it up. There's just so much pressure right now. I'm trying to get everything done but in the midst of it all, I slacked off on what's most important; being your wife and a mom to Carter.

"I know you have important things to do, Tay. I understand. I just know he's sad every time you come home late. He misses you so much."

"And I miss him." She said. "And you. And I love you with all of my heart. I'm sorry I yelled at you. I'm gonna come home early every night now so I can be with you both. I promise."

"I love you." You said, smiling as you intertwined your fingers together. She used her free hand to cup your chin in her hand before leaning down to lay a soft, loving kiss to your lips; wordlessly telling you that it was all gonna be okay like it always will be.
