Clear drops fell down the window pane moving quickly. Harsh water spitting at the car as he drove down the road. Rocks crumbled under the wheels as he sighed pulling into his dormitory driveway.
He could feel the cold air and droplets already, the chill that would stick for minutes after entering his dorm. His groceries soaked all because he left his umbrella in his room. The past week or so had been gloomy, and it dampened everyone's mood.
He turned the car off feeling the familiar heat fade as he watched the rain continue to pelt and roll down his window. His eyes lingered over the building and cars parked around him, the occasional student running out of their car to the safety of the building.
He watched as the person ran, large light blue wings opened over their head. Water slipped over the sides as they wiped at their face.
The person slipped catching themselves as their wingspan opened allowing the rain to pour on their head. He watched as they seemed to yell, probably a curse as they opened and shut the door quickly after shaking and closing their wings. The wings, he recognized. Their society was split between humans and "quadrants".
That's what he was. A quadrant.
And as quadrants, they had a fate. They would meet their soulmate, they all called another half, and feathers would develop on your back. Two parts of one soul, created by their god, Kitsune.
If they turned black, however, it meant your soulmate didn't love you.. or that they'd passed away. It was one of his biggest fears, but even though it was, he hadn't thought much of it.
Sighing, he reached over his seat for his few discarded groceries throwing his jacket over the paper bag. He only bought a few things, though the bag didn't hold well.
His turtleneck wasn't going to keep him dry but he had many more, he wasn't too worried as he opened his car door. He felt the cold air hit him immediately as he shut and locked the doors.
His steps were almost silenced as he walked down the sidewalk to the door. The loud thunder and rain was all he heard as he kept his eyes on the door. He felt the water trickling over his eyelashes and back already sighing. If he had wings, he would be dry.
As he made it under the shelter of the overcast, he opened the door shaking off the excess water. His groceries, luckily, were dry in the bag they remained in. His limbs ached, he was tired from school and the trip, the week just not having been the best.
Walking up to the check-in desk requesting the elevator key. The woman on the other side glanced up at him, he didn't recognize her. The atmosphere in the building was gloomy too, it was humid, and his clothes stuck to his skin.
Water dripped from his horns, his usually puffy hair flat again his neck.
"Pardon me?" He waved, pausing.
"I uh," his breath caught, he was a bit dazed, his words caught in his throat.
"I need the elevator key," he finished, the new lady sighed. He watched her pull out a keyboard powering on her computer. Her nails clicked quietly on the keyboard. He stared for a moment before the woman paused.
"Name?" She said looking at him again. He nodded quickly before answering. He felt the water drip down his back.
"I'm Phandrin Onoya, quadrant 2, ma'am," he said glancing to the side. He watched a few other students, some quadrant 3, some 4, step in. They smiled, waving to the lady before taking the stairwell. Now he just felt annoying.
They were all split between 4 quadrant types, 1 being prey, may be weaker than others. If you were in quadrant 4, you were feared.
You'd be a predator.
