Chapter 9

The way to my house was silent, as we didn't talk, the only thing interrupting it was the quiet directions I gave him. We arrived at the house. It was my mother's before Dravik married her and moved in. After her death, I just assumed that it was Draviks, but what if it was also mine?

What did he all embezzle?

Not letting my thoughts let run free, I opened the car door and walked over to get my bags. It seemed as if Martino wanted to help since he carried the book bag again. A small moment of anxiety filled me as I remembered the drugs on the living room table. If Martino saw them, he'd definitely question if either I or Dravik were drug-addicted. That would lead to where he'd get the drugs or if something ever happened, and that could never happen.

He can't find out.

Martino had already gotten the bag out of the car and was making his way to the front door, also carrying the gym bag. I was just behind him, getting the keys out, and slowly searching for the right one, as I desperately searched for a solution. Just as I found the right key, did I remember, that I had closed the living room door before I was going to school.

Letting out a breath of air, I opened the door to go in, before Martino could, I know manners on point, just so that I could put the bags down next to the closed living room door, he following my example did the same, but while doing so also looked around. There luckily was nothing suspicious in the hall, something never happened in the hall, besides getting dragged or pushed. He didn't want to risk letting the occasional visiting neighbor notice anything.

I was already out the door as he was still standing in the hall, taking it in ''Coming?'' I asked, as my nerves and pain tolerance, were starting to wear thin. Yes, he said as he walked over to me. ''So where are we going?'' he asked just as we passed his car. ''Ice cream store'' was all I said.

The way wasn't long, maybe 6 minutes, as I lived near the outskirts of the city. But 6 minutes in awkward silence, seem like half an hour. Luckily, we had arrived at the store, before he could try to start a conversation. The line in front of us, wasn't long, so we didn't have to wait too long. The iceman asked us what we would like and I ordered ''One scope of strawberry, another of raspberry and the last scope chocolate, could I have it in a cone please.'' I motioned to Martino to give his order, who seemed surprised at my choice, but still had a smirk on as he ordered ''Id like one chocolate scope, a strawberry and lastly a mango also in a cone please.'' ''Right away'' informed the icemen, and no 10 seconds later did we hold our sweet cold desserts in our hands. At the cashier stood a student, who seemed to be working part-time. He said that my order costs $35. I gave him my $50 note and told him to keep the rest. He gave me a thankful smile and wished me a great day as I walked out of the shop.

No minute later had Martino began to say ''That was nice of you, to give the kid $15 tip. But why so much, most would have only given him a dollar or two.'' Not wanting to explain I said ''Because it seemed like he needed it.'' I knew saying 'just because' or 'I don't know' won't satisfy Martino, so I told him half of the reason I did. ''So, our deal is even'' I said, as I have fulfilled my end of it, just like he did.

He had a small smile on his face as he said ''Yes, sure you did, though I hoped we would have already talked more '' I was mentally furrowing my brows, but didn't let my confusion show ''About what?'' I asked a little curious about what he wanted to talk to me about. ''Uhm, well for starters you, since we have met so late. I hoped we could get to know each other better, especially as we are going to live together.'', he said a little awkwardly. I let that sink in and thought about it. It would certainly be better if I knew him better, I could also gain valuable information on what my living conditions are going to be. So, I did something I rarely do to strangers, I've just met. I began a conversation.
