Mackenzie's POV:

The next morning, I woke up early, still dressed in my soft mermaid nightgown. Rubbing my eyes, I stretched and padded quietly down the hall to my baby brother’s room. Miles was already awake, kicking his tiny legs in his crib and babbling softly.

“Good morning, Miles,” I whispered as I leaned over and scooped him up. His little hands reached for my necklace, and I laughed. “Not today, buddy. Let’s get you dressed first.”

I carefully chose a light blue onesie with little stars on it. After wriggling him into his outfit, I carried him to the living room to feed him. But things didn’t go as smoothly as I hoped. Miles spat up his milk once… then again… and again. By the fourth time, I was scrambling for napkins.

“Okay, okay,” I said, dabbing his chin. “You’re making this tricky, huh?”

Finally, after a lot of patience, he finished the bottle around 4:10. I sighed in relief and smiled at him. “See? You did it, little guy.” Since I still had time before school, I pulled a book from the shelf — Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups. Snuggling him in my lap, I read aloud, pointing at the pictures while his tiny eyes followed along. We finished the story around 4:20, and he gave a soft coo, which made me giggle.

After putting the book back, I hurried to get ready for school. I fastened my earrings, slipped my tie-dye shoes on, and clasped my necklace. When I came back to check on Miles, I saw Mommy was already holding him.

“Mommy? What’s wrong?” I asked, my stomach sinking.

Her face looked worried. “Miles slipped off the couch a few minutes ago.”

I froze. “But… I wasn’t here, I was getting ready for school,” I explained quickly, guilt rising in my chest.

“I know, sweetheart. It’s okay,” Mommy reassured, kissing Miles’s head. “He’s not hurt badly. Just gave us both a scare.”

I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “I’m just glad he’s okay,” I said softly, brushing his little arm with my fingers.

Just then, Daddy walked into the living room, rubbing his eyes and yawning. “Morning, you two. Morning, Mia,” he said before leaning down to kiss Mommy’s cheek.

Kenzie piped up, “Daddy, Miles fell off the couch while I was getting ready for school.”

Mommy nodded. “Yes, it happened at about 4:25.”

Daddy crouched by the stroller and looked at Miles. “Well, good thing you’re tougher than you look, buddy,” he said with a smile.

I nodded, then remembered I still needed to finish packing. I hurried to my room, slipped off my tie-dye shoes, and pulled out my backpack. One by one, I placed my notebooks, planner, and pencil case neatly inside. By 4:35, everything was ready to go.

Since I still had a few minutes left, I wandered back to the bookshelf. My eyes landed on one of Miles’s favorites — a Blaze and the Monster Machines book. “This one’s perfect,” I whispered.

I took Miles from Mommy’s arms and settled down to read to him again. He stared at the bright colors on the pages, reaching out like he wanted to touch the cars. We finished the story at exactly 4:45. I kissed his forehead and whispered, “I’ll see you after school, little brother.”

Handing him over to Daddy, I put my shoes back on, slipped my backpack over my shoulders, and kissed both Mommy and Daddy goodbye.

“Have a great day, sweetheart,” Mommy said.
“Love you, Kenzie,” Daddy added.
“Love you too!” I called as I headed out the door.

The day at school felt long, but by 11:37, I was finally home again. Miles was napping in his crib, his tiny chest rising and falling. I knew I had to be extra quiet, so I tiptoed into the kitchen with my backpack and began my homework. The house felt peaceful, the only sounds being the scratch of my pencil against paper and the soft hum of the fridge.

By the time I finished, I felt my eyelids growing heavy. I slipped into my favorite Hello Kitty nightgown and padded down the hall to say goodnight. Mommy and Daddy were sitting on the couch, relaxing after the long day.

“Goodnight, Mommy. Goodnight, Daddy,” I said softly.

“Goodnight, sweetheart,” Mommy replied with a warm smile.
“Goodnight, Kenzie,” Daddy added.

I hugged them both before heading to my room. Climbing into bed, I pulled the blanket up to my chin, already drifting off with the thought that tomorrow would bring another adventure with Miles.
