Mackenzie awoke the following morning to the soft buzz of her alarm. Stretching her arms above her head, she slid out of bed and headed straight for her vanity. She carefully applied her makeup—starting with foundation, then moving to a light blush and a touch of eyeshadow before finishing with lip gloss. Satisfied with her reflection, she reached for her book, The Devil of Downtown, and read quietly for about five minutes.
When her phone chimed with a notification, Mackenzie opened her social media apps. Smiling to herself, she snapped a quick picture in her dorm room mirror and captioned it: Homecoming dress shopping today! Within moments, friends began liking and commenting on her post.
She then dressed for the day, brushed her teeth, and tied her hair into a neat ponytail. After using the bathroom, she crossed the room to gently wake her friend. “Kayla, time to get up,” Mackenzie said, nudging her. Kayla groaned but soon sat up, rubbing her eyes. Together, they prepared for the school day and headed out.
At school, Mackenzie was greeted by her classmate Johnny. His curious expression made her smile before he spoke.
“Have you decided what color dress you’re going to wear?” Johnny asked.
“Yes,” Mackenzie replied confidently.
“What color?” he pressed.
“Blue,” she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.
“Okay,” Johnny said with a nod, clearly satisfied with her choice.
The rest of the school day went by in a blur of classes and chatter about the upcoming homecoming dance. By the final bell, Mackenzie was more than ready to focus on her plans.
Back in her dorm room, she set down her backpack and immediately brushed out her hair, letting the soft strands fall smoothly over her shoulders. Afterward, she sat at her desk and finished her homework with determination. Once her assignments were complete, she carefully removed her makeup, enjoying the clean, refreshed feeling.
Next, Mackenzie laid out her outfit for the following day, which included her favorite pair of red shoes. After a final glance in the mirror, she gathered her purse and walked outside, waiting eagerly for her father’s arrival.
A few minutes later, Brian pulled up, waving warmly as she approached the car. Mackenzie hopped in with a grin, and together they headed to the mall.
Inside, they browsed through rows of dresses until Mackenzie spotted the one that immediately caught her eye: a beautiful blue dress with an attachable skirt that gave it a versatile look. “This is the one,” she whispered, holding it up against her frame.
Brian smiled proudly. “That looks perfect on you.”
They purchased the dress and then walked to a nearby jewelry shop. Mackenzie tried on earrings, bracelets, and necklaces until she settled on a delicate silver set that paired perfectly with her new dress. After paying, they headed back to the car, both carrying shopping bags filled with treasures for the big night.
When they returned home, Mackenzie set her bags gently on her bed before brushing her hair once again, running the bristles smoothly through her strands. She then removed any remaining traces of makeup, used the bathroom, and brushed her teeth.
Finally, she carefully placed her new jewelry back into its box, took off her earrings for the night, and switched off her lamps. Curling up under the covers, Mackenzie smiled, already imagining how wonderful homecoming would be. Within minutes, she drifted off to sleep.
